Looking good. What's the idea behind the ceiling of the control room - specifically those structures along the corners on the left and right sides?

On the left side, the main ducting runs along that I-beam, and so had to be boxed-in... this meant having to create a similar structure on the right side for control room symmetry - both for even acoustics as well as cosmetic reasons!

Great site, btw! Didn't know the existence of it yet.. :o

If you would like it and have the time for it, here you can find some pictures of my studio;

thanks anyway!

How do the soffit's for the monitors work?
Are they built into a "double wall"?
I'd sure like to see a close-up pic of those.

What size are the control room and Iso windows?
They look huge!
Will it be a single pane of glass on each side or broken up into smaller glazed sections?

Looking damn good Bruce!

I see you are using rockwool for the insulation. I still havent been able to find that locally.

The soffit mount is based on John's diagram HERE...

What my contractor did was to build them as separate enclosures and then place the entire enclosure into the corner framing (insulating and sealing behind the enclosure and the "triangular" space on the sides)... so they are built-in but not really - they can be removed from the framing quit easily.

Using this separate soffit enclosure idea also has the advantage of being easy to change should I switch monitors in the future - I'm not tied to the framing that surrounds it, I simply have to change the interior of the enclosure and mount it back into the frame!

The control room is 18x12 with the window being something like 5.5x5 or so... the window in the vocal booth is large - 8x5 or so...

The booth itself is 8x11, the two other studios are roughly 15x12 and 13x12...

We managed to maintain pretty close to 8' ceiling height in a lot of places - except where ducting and beams made it impossible. (Yeah, I would have liked higher height - but "ya work wit wot ya got!")

I do like the angled look of where the ducting is framed - it will look cool when painted/finished!

I'm getting anxious to get in there with the gear!

Drywall and flooring should be going down this week, so I should have some "prettier" update pics for John on the weekend!

Looks very good so far Bruce. In about six months I'm going to turn my garage into a live room. It'll be about 24' square. Looks good bro.

It's goin' to be a nice place for a bear to hibernate..........a choice of dens to crawl into and all:D

That's cool!

What I really wanted for a tracking room was THIS.... but I just couldn't come up with that kind of cash!

That's exactly how mine's gonna look, excepth the ceiling will be about 30' lower and and about 60' shorter and not quite as wide and no grand piano and...........

looking good Bruce!

What are you using in there for the board and recorder?

The board is still my ubiquitous Mackie 24*8.... (for now...!)

Recorders are HD24, Cubase SX DAW, 4 XT20s, Tascam DA-40 DAT and Alesis Masterlink...

I will also be adding an API 3124 (pre) and a John Hardy M1 (pre), as well as Lucid A/D and D/A converters...

:)

I track to the HD24 - edit on the DAW... XT20s are backup and remote units now....

Mixdown to the Masterlink primarily with the occasional double to the DAT...

Let me clarify that Bruce. I thought you were building your studio. I was wondering what part of it your working on today. You have your electronics tore down, right. Or do you. Is your old studio still up and running. Maybe thats where I'm confused.

So you use cubase. I'm in the process of getting my digital setup. I'm also using cubase, with a lexicon core 32 system, but I haven't finished hooking it all up. Lots of different cables that I've never used before. Word clock BNC, d-subs, Spdf?) etc. New stuff to learn.

Hey Bruce, I just picked up a copy of Audio Xpress magazine. There's a very interesting article about the old theory of small rooms/no bass. Ha, boy do they make mincemeat of that one. There's some new info, about how lo freq works in small rooms, and what you have to do to make the room work. I'll see if I can find a link on the net, Pretty interesting. Something to do with how a calibration mic works, and a room is the same principle. But I havn't read the whole thing yet. I'll let everyone know as soon as I can. It MAY have some pretty profound impact on info here(BTW, the magazine claims they are the audio authority, what ever that is. Ha! )
