blowing air into E609

is it a bad idea to singing into an E609 without a wind blocker? or is that only for condenser mics..

Well aside from the fact that you probably won't get very good results singing into an e609, just try it. It's not like you're going to break it unless you do something pretty crazy....well yeah, just try it and if you're getting to many pops and instances of clipping due to air then get a pop filter. My guess is you probably won't need one.

It's ribbon mics that are especially susceptible to airblasts, some condensers can be a bit delicate, but dynamic mics are generally quite robust.......

Mind you, I'm not sure why you'd want to blow into ANY mic -- it's not like the sound of air blasts is particularly useful - especially on vocals.........!!!

If you sing directly into most mics, it will make a popping sound on the p's and other hard consonants where a burst of air is emitted and there is no pop filter. The closer to the source the more effected the mic will be by the wind velocity. You should protect all your mics with a pop filter, most importantly ribbon microphones. Plus, you don't want spit getting into your mic capsule, or onto your mics in general. You should use a pop filter because it's the most common and easiest way to make sure you get a nice clean (free from pop's) take on a vocal track. I recommend the Stedman PS101 above all other pop filters, it's as if it is not even there. The Stedman filter remains clear at all frequencies. The panty hose style pops tend to add slight compression and slightly reduced high frequency response. The Stedman PS101 is the closet thing you can get to not having a pop filter at all. They are a little more expensive but they are worth it. They are metal, so they clean easily too, take it down and clean with Windex -- no more spit.
