blackface ADAT w light pipe

https://homerecording.com/ubb/icons/icon5.gif I have, I think, the first incarnation ADAT (blackface, painted logos) and I am trying to get material into Logic gold using the light-pipe connected with the MOTU 2408 soundcard, but when I make the connection the ADAT spits out horrible amounts of white noise. It must be the ADAT cause when I turn it off or pull out the lightpipe, the noise dissappears.
Anyone have any ideas what is making the sound and how to get rid of it - I've been forced to use audio outs and in, but would prefer to stay digital.

Are your sampling rates matched? I remember reading that the original ADATs only recorded at 48k,so if the rest of your gear isn't at that same rate,it would explain your problem perhaps.Cheers!
