These days I'm attempting to back off the compression and let the sound breath more.

Did I make the track too crisp in doing so?

Kev,
Learning NOT to use compression is a hard one - I've almost managed it myself - has taken effort though.
The 1st 1min 9sec is absolutley lovely - quietisg bur drew my ear in to listen (like a teacher talking quietly rather than shouting). reminded me very much of Jimmy webb for that section.
The subsequqnrt sections are really good.
I LOVE the bass solo bit & the rebuild with the martial snare to the guitar solo is clever.
The denourment is lovely again - I'm tempted to say that you could get away without the band - in fact you probably could.
The only comment I can offer in terms of further work is that the band section is very smooth - it doesn't have the same emotional impact as the vocal/piano bits - but then again that provides contrast.

Nice drums.

I think the dynamics work well. I like the bass/piano counterpoint break.

Early in the song and at the end, the vocal is too loud relative to the solo piano, or the piano too quiet etc.

Great mix.

I'm going to retrack the vocal, as over on RP they're catching a phase issue w/ the tracking, and I've got a new chain that works particularly well w/ my voice.

If you're going to put something out there for posterity's sake, then it should be right.

I'm on the march to completion though ... check out the final mix to Final Daze that I just posted.
