I came across an old "Black Jack" 3 piece for sale. I don't play, but wanted a basic jazz kit on hand for my studio. It has evans heads, the kick has the rubbery black ring on it and seems to be nice and thumpy and not too ringy...

Looks like its from the '70s, and has a retrofit pearl mount on the tom, the kind that is attached to the metal rim instead of the shell.

Anyone ever heard of this Japanese brand? I found nothing online.

i've seen one around but im not sure where... tell me how they are once you get 'em.

Will do.

I dropped my deposit off the other day and meant to bring my trades in and pick up today, but got a little snowed in.

I'm not a drummer myself, but I've been around 'em enough to assess the general quality.

They're Japanese, and look like they used a kind of metal slider to hang the one small tom (there's a floor tom, too) The original owner replaced this with a nice pearl mount that is mounted to the rim of the tom, rather than thru the shell.

I can't wait to get it home! Stay tuned for photos.

Yes, please post photos. I've never seen nor heard of these puppies!

I got them!

Woot. I'll post photos of their red sparkly goodness soon. They're pretty sweet to my untrained eye, and definitely sound great to me after tapping out some of the rudiments on 'em for a few minutes.

My little jazz group's drummer was a session and gigging drummer in the '50's and '60s who knows his stuff far better than I. I'll also post his comments on them next week when he plays them.

Bass drum is 18" diam. by 16", tom is 12" by 8", f.t. is 14" by 16", snare is 14" by 5.5" (I think. I don't know how to measure toms.) Retrofit mount on the tom is a "Pearl Integrated Suspension System." It came w/o the tubular mount for the tom, but I got them to pull one off a cheapie used set. It's too long, though. I'll either cut it down or pick up a new one.

I can't even play them, but I'm still

Psyched,

Joe

Found one factoid: an ebay listing on a tom mount says that this brand was sold thru Sears in the early '60's. I'll keep digging.

Photos.

Pedal, Hi Hat Stand and Snare Stand were all junk/thrift shop finds that I had on hand. I expect drummers will wish to bring their own.
