Are birch drums also good for rock music?

Sure!! Tama made birch drums for many years and they were recorded on many great rock records. Half the Rush records were Tama Superstars. If any rock drummer used Tama in the 70's and 80's, chances are it was a birch kit.

Birch is right in between Maple and Mahogany in sound. Maple has a sharp attack and is very bright while still being warm. Mahogany has a nice low end and is very full. Some engineers proclaim that birch is the best of both worlds.

I prefer birch for rock/pop for it's focused mids and attack. I prefer maple for Jazz it's "warmer" low end.

Birch sounds great

Birch sounds great, but many prefer Maple because the wood seems to stand up to the elements better.

If you keep your drums in a space with a constant temperature, than go for birch.

If the drums are going to be moved around a lot and subjected to changes in temp and humidity, Maple might be better for you.
