Someone wanted me to post a binaural clip on a non-musical source, so here you go.

Make sure to listen with headphones. Also, my computer is pretty noisy so just try to ignore that.

Tell me what you think.

Hey danny - thanks for that. jingle bells, well keys!!!
A REALLY good sample of binaural is to set the mics up in a biggish space with a wooden or hard floor & then walk in an elipse from the mics & back again. Gives the Vol change indicating distance, the panning effect & room sound. Try it for your own fun.
There are a couple of sites on the net that have bin samples too. I used to have them in my fav's list but lost that when the harddrive poohed itself.
Thanks again

sounds cool man. I might look into purchasing them, but like you I'd need to get a portable rig going.
I wonder if you can get some sort of foam head like this:
http://www.michaels.com/online/images/e02308_lg.jpg

and put the ear pieces in it. Then you could have your own binaural head (or as close as you can without spending thousands of dollars), allowing you to be in front of it.

I'm also surprised the ear buds don't seem to pick up any movement of your head or body...or any internal body vibrations

Yea I need a dummy head. But I also need one with ears.

The one you posted looks good (especially the pink flowers on the top) but there's no ears. :(

I've been trying to think of a good, cheap way to make one. Neumann makes a binaural set with a dummy head but that's close to $10,000.

Any ideas how I can get the ears?

the one i linked was just a sample...that's not an actual head for sale, but I'm sure Michael's or crafts stores would have something like that

ebay has a bunch, and cheap. I'd carve some holes in the ears to fit the buds in them.

I think it's pretty weird that I hear left/right/behind and all variations but nothing in front.

Maybe it's just me. I've listened to a few of binaural recordings and had the same results with each one.

i have the same trav, it just doesn't sound like it's real, i mean its sounds 'spacial' and all sure but not like an accoustic enviroment i've ever been in!

thanks for the post danny!

except I think much more spatial than a simple stereo mic setup.

I think a lot of it has to do with the chain the audio goes through when you're listening back to binaural. The point of binaural was to capture the audio how we hear it...with reflections off the head and all that goes into it. Problem is, now that we listen back to the binaural recording, we're listening in "binaural" a second time through speakers, within our own environment and using our own head. So it's like being double processed.

at least that's my take on it. I will say that holophonic sound is pretty damn good though.
