justin from godflesh has a huuuuuge sound-because he takes his time, making slow, oppressive, absurdly heavy music.

i would classify kurt from converge as having a "dangerous" sound, i guess.

of bands on this list, i'd probably go with sepultura (arise-roots era-arise was far more twisted, but roots was just relentless), metallica c. justice (probably my favorite stereo test album-good stereos distort pleasingly to my ears-shitty ones flap, pop, etc too easily), and the deftones (the tone may not be as cutting-edge, but his riffs are wicked (think my own summer for a reasonably digestible, but wicked main riff).

others whose guitar sounds (i'm counting tone and style for ryhtym and lead) kick me in the teeth include sabbath (of course, especially during their dirtier recordings), zeppelin (huge sound, electric or acoustic)between the buried and me (brilliant 2-axe rythyms), the dillinger escape plan (nuff said), bloodjinn (badass metal band from nc gathering serious non-local street cred for riffs/variety-many compare their work to old metallica), bob dylan (don't tell me his early solo acoustic work didn't do it for you-it's not that it's difficult. it's that he MEANT it), donovan (he's the man-i didn't realize it until i heard songs other than mellow yellow), tool (great instrument noises, very clever use of effects),meshuggah (have you guys heard nothing? GOOD GOD MAN, that's an insanely deep/heavy sound!).

i think that will do for now.

I would say Queens of the Stone Age, esp the new album and song No One Knows. His sound blows me away, because its different and has balls. Hey i loved metal as much as a the next guy, but lets face it theres more to a big sound than metal up your ass buzz saw hi gain no mids crap that seems to be prevalent in metal.

RANTON

EDIT-Oh but out of the bands listed? Deftones, their the only one that even has a listenable sound anymore, listened to And Justice for All the other day, took the fucking paint right off my walls, not to mention i had to install a few extra bass knobs just to squeeze some low end out it. Hey heres an idea, lets higher a new bassist and then treat him like shit by making his parts unhearable! I hate metallica

RANTOFF

D

That Queens of the Stone Age guitar sound is all right, but I it was way better when it was Kyuss. And that's my Guitar Sound Rant of the Day©.

If you want to talk about tone then you NEED to mention Gary Moore. Whatever style he plays he has tone for DAYS!!! I also have to defend AC/DC because Angus' is a straight cord from guitar to amp kinda guy. The tone that he gets out of his 68 Marshalls is all power and volume fellas. If you were anywhere from 10 to 30 in 1980 when Back In Black came out you would know how heavy that was for its time. Then they came back and topped that with For Those About To Rock!!! Oh, by the way, I do prefer Bon Scott on vocals, but, Brian Johnson can hardly be called "the new singer" after 22 years with the band!!!
Hear hear, my goodfella! "The End of the World" (from Corridors of Power for all you non-believers ;) ) was my introduction to GM, and it still rocks all day long. And Still Got the Blues is loaded with great tones, too (personal favorite is probably "Walking By Myself" 'cause of all the great licks).

I must reinforce my vote for Pantera. Everyone keeps saying "oh but have you seen AC/DC live?!"

I can't say I've heard AC/DC live because I haven't, but if it sounds anything like it does on their records then Pantera blows them out of the water.

And why do people keep saying that AC/DC's tone was the heaviest thing in 1980? Who cares? That was 20 years ago. I think this thread is more of a general question and not limited to a certain era. No matter how GOOD AC/DC's tone sounds, many bands have buried it in the "biggest and most dangerous" category years ago.

Well somebody had to say it. :D

pREACH ON uladine

YOU SAID IT ALL, NOW IF YOUR INTO PANTERA CHECKOUT EMOTIONAL FLATLINES NEWEST TUNEIN THE MP3CLINIC

ENTOMBED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You want nasty, heavy, fast, evil, this-record-scares-me-a-little metal axe tone????

Check out "Clandestine" by ENTOMBED. Their second album on Earache Records, from back when they were still death-thrash. So heavy (and so imitated) that it became the "Swedish Sound."

My usual tone (thanks only partly to my equipment) blows dead goats. I'd probably blow a dead goat myself if I could get Entombed's old tone. :D

As an old metal-connaisseur, I wanna chime in too..
C7sus, keep your bigotted folk-visions to yourself! :p

Anyway, back in the days (1980), I think Kevin Heybourne from Angelwitch has the heaviest tone (and a quality tone)... I mean, 1980-Angelwitch almost has the same kind of production as 1986 Metallica-Master of Puppets!!!

Then, onto Gary Moore... I think his tone on a song like "Pretty Woman" rules... endless sustain, lots of gain and still all very clear.

Chuck Schuldiner (Death) on Human... friggin' heavy.

Exodus (live album "Another Lesson in Violence")... granted, somewhere you can hear just the stage sound, and that's pretty normal, but with the P.A. engaged....MAAAAAAAN!!!! HEA-VY!!!!

I voted for Pantera btw... but you forgot to include these in the list:
Iced Earth
The Haunted

and ofcourse Chet Atkins and Hank B. Marvin... ;)

btw, when it comes to the guys with the heaviest tone coming purely from the strings, it's got to be a toss between Dick Dale and SRV (both play around 0.18-0.60!!!)

I caught a man-o-war gig in a small (seriously small) brick lined bar. I think at the time they were in the guiness book of world records as the "loudest band". I went home nearly deaf, an affliction that lasted for 3 days. So as far as big, and dangerous..... anything that screws a man up for several days has to count.

well dimmu borgir puts out some pretty heavy shit so prob them. i would say death is badass too but theyre no longer a band :(.

another wicked guitar sound would be rick rubin's work with the band 'trouble'. check out albums 'trouble' ('90) & 'manic frustration' ('91).

the only sound i ever considered 'dangerous' would be ted nugent in early the 90s. that sound would destroy your ear drums if you got too close.

YEAH! "Been Caught Buttering" is a ferocious-sounding record. I have it on vinyl to showcase the priceless cover art. :D

WTF is wrong with this poll, the most dangerous guitar sound isn't even in the poll?

Listen to the song Black Sabbath from the album Black Sabbath by the band Black Sabbath.

There you have it.

they are no where near being a favorite band of mine, but Rorschact test.... their album Peace Minus One.... has this incredible guitar sound.

i like godflesh's guitars too.
