I conceded to the great tone, but great guitar work? Hardly. They have a few gems, but they also have a massive catalog of utter crap.

And there's a difference in being consistent, and being apathetic and uncreative. They choose the latter.

I didn't like AC/DC much until I realized the beauty is in the simplicity. It's almost easier to make a song interesting with lots-o-notes and lots-o-chords. However, there must be some sort of creative genius involved in consistently generating popular songs out of just three chords.

youve obviously never heard angus live... im sure you'll say you have though because you dont want to lose face. can kirk hammett spin circles around him with his speed? probably, but i cant remember one solo by him or any other of those bands. that's enough said right there. just my opinion, of course this argument is trivial anyways and not worth debating so im done.

Regarding a "big" sound, a big aspect is the production and engineering in generating a huge raw tone. My vote goes to Bob Rock for consistenly producing albums with huge sounds such as Sonic Temple, Dr. Feelgood, the black album, etc. Hell, he even gave Veruca Salt a bigger sound.

No scriabin, actually I have heard Angus live. No amount of great rock tone was going to make me sit through that pathetic vocal performance though. And actually, Angus' live sound sucked, but it was Shoreline after all. It's not the first show I've left because the singer was terrible either (Red Hot Chili Peppers come to mind). And I never once mentioned Kirk Hammet, but I can sing quite a few more metallica solos than I can AC/DC solos. I remember the entire "You shook me all night long" solo, but I also know many of the solos to a lot of those other bands' songs, because I listen to them. If you did, you would too, it's just you listen to AC/DC and not the other bands, so that doesn't really prove anything.

im really sorry you hastily "assumed" that is all i listened to:)
yes i have heard some those bands such as metallica's older stuff enter sandman, master of puppets...ect to their unforgiven stuff to their load stuff ect... never really cared for it. as for deftones, i thought pink ponies was plain detuned noise. alas the votes speak for themselves. im sorry you left the concert though, you missed the best part when they fire off the cannons!

Scriabin... I haven't ever seen them live, and I couldn't care less about losing face. It's a message board. I don't know you and you don't know me. It's just an opinion. The fact that you assume someone would lie to "save face" doesn't say much about your own personal character.

Why would I go see someone who's music doesn't interest me?
I'm through arguing about it.It's not worth it.

BBB..That's a pretty accurate insight concerning Bob Rock. I hadn't thought about it, but you're right. :)

hmm...assuming someone might lie says absolutley jack shit about my character. this argument is pretty trivial and a waste of anyone's energy so lets make up and be friends:)

I got it!

good ol Buzzo of course... MELVINS!

-jhe

I saw the Melvins at a pretty small place in Santa Cruz, The Catalyst. My chest was vibrating so hard from the bass I thought I was going to explode. Now that was some heavy shit. Kyuss live came in a close second, although since the show was outdoors there was no captive space to capture and resonate with the sound waves. But they were so loud and heavy that it pretty much cancelled thought for the day.

Gotta go with Pantera on this one!

Gotta go with Pantera on this one!

I've gotta go to someone not on the list. Best rock sound I've ever heard was Todd Rundgrin on Meatloaf's Bat out of Hell CD.

pantera.... don't like em much, but have a crushing sound

Like it or not, Neil Young's tone on ARC/WELD (Crazy Horze - Ragged Glory tour) is pretty mammoth.

If you want to talk about tone then you NEED to mention Gary Moore. Whatever style he plays he has tone for DAYS!!! I also have to defend AC/DC because Angus' is a straight cord from guitar to amp kinda guy. The tone that he gets out of his 68 Marshalls is all power and volume fellas. If you were anywhere from 10 to 30 in 1980 when Back In Black came out you would know how heavy that was for its time. Then they came back and topped that with For Those About To Rock!!! Oh, by the way, I do prefer Bon Scott on vocals, but, Brian Johnson can hardly be called "the new singer" after 22 years with the band!!!

Dimebag "Motherfuckin" Darrel

Dime's tone crushes everyone listed, hands down. And his playing is better i feel than most of the other guitarists listed. Hetfields tones on the Black album were really meaty also. Prong on Rude awakening had massive guitar sound as well. In Flames has some hefty guits too.

Nice resurrection of a 15-month old thread... How did you even find it?

whoa this is 15 months old.... thats insane

well good sound:

In flames (check out song called JOTUN)
Children of Bodom (check out KISSING THE SHADOWS)
metallica dude... no doubt
Iced earth (check out PHANTOM OF OPERA)
Blind Guardian (check out PRECIOUS JERUSALEM)

btw, i love every band in that poll, but im just bringing out the infamous to try to get u guys to listen to good stuff. it was on one of these polls that i found out about dream theater, and right now i love their music, talent, whatever else.
