Wow, such a great list. I have to go with Megadeth, because they still do it for me.

Well, so does AC/DC. In fact, they're in my car right now (the disc, not the band----I think).

The song "Insomnia" by Megadeth is insane. I love it.

I used to be a huge fan of Metallica's, but between their musical direction and their business direction, I dropped them. I still listen to the first four albums, but everything after Justice doesn't do anything for me. Just my humble opinion.

Megadeth seems to keep doing it right, only better. Mustaine never got happy, and it's kept his music angry and raw. Each song seems to be telling someone to piss off, and it works.

Indeed. But what about the solo on "Hook in Mouth"?

I didn't read every single post on this thread, but I read most and I didn't see Black Label Society mentioned. Zakk Wylde had a bad ass, heavy tone with Ozzy, but his Black Label sound is down right brutal. HUGE sound. It is proof that if you know your shit you CAN get a heavy recorded sound out of a mega-gain rig.

Also, Dimebag. Yea, his leads sounded a little thin, but it was part of his style to use all that pitch shifting (digitech whammy pedal) with his pinch harmonics to make it squeal at pitches unreachable on a standard guitar scale. His rhythms were super heavy and brutal though.

All great ones in their own way. Love the Deftones but yes...very simple stuff. AC/DC, you have to include Angus, EVH, duh! Haven't heard anyone mention Nuno Bettencourt. "Pornograffitti" is such a massive raw sound on that album. So many more. John Petrucci's solo stuff, But......Fact is, there is no "one" heaviest sound, they're all great..all heavy

I bow down to EVH but I gotta say, my favorite recording to date has got to be AC/DC "If You Want Blood" live recording. That guitar is bustin' balls when "She's Got the Jack" come up.

Siagon Kick

One of my favorite all time metal guitar sounds was from an eighties band called "Siagon Kick". Although thier chior like vocals usually decieved the listener into underestimating just how heavy the band was at first listen, the actual sounds and riffs spewing fourth from thier two guitarists was ABSOLUTELY MASSIVE and very well produced. Saw em live at the Limelight in NYC once and was blown away by how they got that same massive overdubbed sound live.

Picking from the list though I chose Pantera.

When Jerry kicked in the afterburner. Bourns ultrashaft push/pull with unity gain amplifier.

Sounds like a jet taking off. Best place to find it is Jerry wailing into his final solo on Deal. MANY recordings.

In fact jet aircraft engines are what inspired Jerry to go after the sound in the first place.

I vote Pantera, but there are heavier guitarist, i.e: Jack Owen, ex Cannibal Corpse.

I voted for Sepultura.

Because they deserved it. I followed them through four albums, and on the last "true" Sepultura album "Roots" their sound reached an all time high. It just sounds like it should, thick, meaty, heavy. A lot of it has to do with how friggin hard they pound their guitars, and the overwhelming attitude with which they attack them. A lot of it also has to do with the fact that they are crazy Brazilians. I remember reading an interview with the Korn guitarists where they claimed that Sepultura stole their sound. I laughed... there is no way that chumpy Korn sound is even close to the all out brutality of "Roots." Check out a song called "Straighthate," that's Sepultura in a nutshell.

The sound on Arise and Chaos AD is not bad either.

.

The first two tracks on the Against Album where awesome (against and choke).
Chaos Ad Rocks

Listen to the song Black Sabbath from the album Black Sabbath by the band Black Sabbath.

+1000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000

None of these other guys count...and here is why.

Without Sabbath, none of these guys exist. It isn't dangerous if someone has done it before you have. Period. End of discussion.

Whenever i hear norma jean, I always feel like i just got in a fight...im not really a fan of them, but their guitars are brutal.

Black Sabbath? Hmmm...never heard of them...I'll have to look into it.

;)

eh...i had to vote for metallica on this one, just because when it flat-out comes down to it, they're the ultimate "guitar band" of all time

i would give 2nd to sepultura, for sure...closely followed by pantera
