I have been doing more research on the laptop I want to buy for my home studio. I originally was looking at a PC because I am accustomed to them. I was probably going to buy a decked out Asus or Toshiba. After looking more thoroughly, custom computers like Rain, ADK, and PCaudiolabs seem to be the way to go and a Macbook Pro is even better.

The issues I found that come up quite often are related to latency issues and driver issues between software and hardware items in your DAW system, which straight out of the box MACs seem to have less of.

WHY do MACs have better performance??
What causes more prevalent errors or unwanted performance issues in PCs??

Is it the MAC (OS) vs PC windows operating software that is the root of the problem??

I believe Rain, ADK, and PCaudiolabs run on windows platforms, so are they subject to the same issues that PC's have or a they set-up to run more error free like MAC's??

If you use a laptop to record, does it have to be totally for recording? For example, would it be a disaster to use it for photos, to load your CD collection on and use it as a stereo, use as a word processor, and other simple stuff etc??

OK, I'll bite.

Apple controls their own hardware while Windows has to deal with an infinate amount of hardware combinations. That being said I've used 3 or 4 different pc's for recording and have only one issue with a firewire card, and as soon as I used one recommended by the manufacturer it worked like a charm.

Whether or not you choose to use a Mac or PC should depend more on what interface/software you want to use. Some are designed to be used with a particular platform. No platform is without issues, and a user of is advised to have some working knowledge of the technical aspects of their platform of choice.

Laptops frequently trade mobility for sheer horsepower, and a laptop that is a desktop replacement is going to cost much more while achieving the same level of performance.

I use desktop PCs and build them myself. What issues they have, I solve.

You do not have to use a laptop solely for recording. It is capable of running a variety of applications without causing you grief.

I just don't understand why people have to hate on Windows. Windows 7 is a perfectly good operating system but people insist on installing it on older hardware. There is no reason, in my opinion, why a Windows PC running at or above system requirements can't have the same performance as a Mac running at or above system requirements.

I can't even get Windows 7 to run my 1080i monitors in 1080i (XP had no problem with that, my Mac systems don't even ask about it - they just do it).

I'm not doing the whole Mac vs. PC thing - But if Samp 12 is ported to the Mac (as rumor has it), I wouldn't complain about it...

Have used windows boxes with Sonar for 10 years. Absolutely no issues except for an audio interface issue with (I can't even remember the brand). I simply got rid of it and went with one recommended by Cakewalk (M-Audio) and have never had any issues. It just works! I would recommend using your computer for music only however. Hooking it to the internet is the quickest way to really screw things up. You get all sorts of crap downloaded that your not even aware of. Microsoft is really good at "updating" your system with a lot of useless garbage that is designed for internet security and not making music.

I have a PC, and a Mac, I use the 7 year old PC for recording, and the Mac for the office, all my software, Sonar, Soundforge Acid Pro, etc, is PC, so that's what I use, and rarely have any issues.

My experience with the whole Win vs Mac thing is that you will get a lot of anecdotal information and folks that will bash something based of what they've read with no opinion of their own. I have never used a MAC so I can't give you any hands on advice about their performance. Do MACs outperform PC's? It depends on the specs. All I know is I have used nothing but PCs because I don't wanna spend 2 grand on a computer that I can build myself in PC form for nearly 1/3 the price as well as have access to easy and cheap replacement/upgrade parts. I have used PC's for recording since I started and I have had ZERO issues spanning from Windows 98 to the present.

Hey Dave, Turn automatic updates off and get a good anti-virus. Then you have recording and **** capabilities all in one box. :D

This is an easy one.

Because there are a fraction of Macs in use compared to PC's.

DUH!

Less computers means fewer problems reported.

everybody knows that macs are only for professionals use. you can't play any games on macs, and you can't put a virus on them. That's why they are better than pcs.

The above statements are completely factual and not open for debate.
