How many people here are running more than their DAW on their computers. I was thinking of upgrading my PC and using DAW on my current system so I don't have to fork over more cash to buy a complete new system. I have other progams like Corel Draw 9 and the internet, etc on my current PC. I know there will be conflicts but I was wondering how much of a problem it is to run your DAW on a computer that does more than DAW?

I run everything on the same OS installation. Development software, graphics, games, office, and audio. Didn't have any luck doing it on Win98, but on NT4 and Win2K I've had great success.

hey Slack,

Given the current pricing on computer parts (i.e. Mobos, chips, memory, etc.) wouldn't it make sense to fork over a few hundred bucks and have a dedicated machine? This way there will never be an issue of software, or hardware robbing your system of precious resources.

I use mine for everything -- Office, internet, email, writing code, capturing video, my kid's CD-ROMs, etc. The key to my success is using two hardware profiles. My Recording profile has the ethernet card and the serial and parallel ports disabled.

Then I'd need TWO screaming machines. We've already got 5 (soon to be 6, yikes) machines running in our home. I can't justify two nice ones for myself. It's cheaper just to buy Windows 2000 and deal with initial setup hassles than to buy two machines, and it's less of a headache than dual booting. Your mileage may vary of course.

I browse the internet, do email, play Quake, capture/edit video, work with Rhino/3D Studio Max AND do DAW stufff all on my single computer. Never had any problems...

Dual boot/dedicated systems are overkill in my opinion (unless you have $$ coming out of the wazoo...)

I currently have 5 working PCs set up in my house, with 2 more not plugged in right now. My DAW (Win98SE) is supposed to be dedicated to music only, but I also have people over for computer LAN games. So my music system also has a few games on it (Starcraft, AOE II, etc.). So far there seems to be no negative impact.

It was always my understanding to have a dedicated unit as a DAW. So, I have always kept to that belief. My latest unit onlt has my editing software, plus plugins, burning software and OS. Heck, I don't even have a modem in it. If I need to send something via the net I burn over to CD, then mail it out. Or I patch to an ISDN unit and away it goes. I look at my unit as a racing sailboat...spartan down below, but boy does this baby move! If I'm in the mood to just cruise, I hop aboard my other unit (its no slouch either) and a way I go. Like you Slack, we have multiple machines at home (5 and counting), so why not have a dedicated DAW!

I have one machine. It does everything i need it to do. No troubles with resources or anything.

BUT, I forbid things that run in the background. No realplkayerjukebox... no nothing.. I have to open up stuff if I want it running.

very efficient.

Ok, so I have Win 98 SE, do you think I will have a problem with anything? I'm going to upgrade my RAM, buy a soundcard and add a second hard drive to use only for my DAW. Any more info on tweaks or problems that I should know about would be great! Any compatability problems with 98 or should I upgrade to 2000? Thanks for the info so far!

I'm on 98 SE too and I was wondering if the 2000 was any better.

My system:
Pentium IV 1,5 Ghz
256Mb RAM PC133
30 gig 7200 RPM HardDrive (Splitted in two partitions of 13,9 gig each... One partition is used to install all the programs and the other is dedicated to my program's TEMP folders)

Cheers!
