This place is the only comfy spot on the net that is quite this friendly to the newbie homerecording community.
Anyplace else they're turning their noses up at folks with Portastudios. They're snidely dismissing the digitally challenged as the lepors of the new millenium. Here a 424 is a hip way to learn a whole bunch about the process of recording itself while saving up for something with a better noise floor.
If you've found a friendlier and more informative (please note the use of AND instead of OR in the preceding phrase) place I'd like to verify that fact for myself. We want both!

Drstawl: Me thinks you have misread my rant. I like it here! By the way, thanks again for taking out the time to download and give me your expert opinion on my songs. I also know of nowhere on the web to get any respect (WHICH IS ENTIRELY ANOTHER RANT). I think this is a modern thinking space. I think in general, and I mean to offend no one that this might apply to, more advanced professional sound engineers may very well laugh at times at the ignorance of beginning soundcrafters and their porta02s. Sure, it's funny, but to the dude with the porta02, it is the object of their creativity, their art. As a musician and stage performer I've dealt with a lot of pretentiousness among various soundmen, and I don't really completely understand why. I think it may be in part because of the underdog factor. I've come to a point where I am realizing the large role that a good soundman can play in the production and acceptance of an artist with little to no recognition back to the engineer. I'm sure that can be frustrating, especially if you are good and know it. Other things may contribute as well, but going back to my original point, I have only experienced a small amount of that pretentiousness here (a good thing).
Anyway, if I tend to rant and rave in ways not clear as the meaning, it's probably in a good way. I'm generally just taking alternate perspectives on a subject.

It's a common problem in the world, it seems that often technical people can't get why someone else can't get what they get, if you get what I mean... and they forget that they were once completely without any knowledge about this domain they now know so much about and find it easy to be amused by the learning pains of those that come along afterwards...
I am a technical person in my field (computer stuff) and I am constantly trying not to let this happen to me... but it seems to be an easy trap to fall into, I find it beckoning to me often and I have to struggle against it.
I don't know of any solution except experiment, listen, learn, blow off the ones that are dyed-in-the-wool-underwear assholes, and focus on the ones who are not.

I have experienced NO pretentiousness here. This is a very good thing - and a very cool place to get great advice!
My first demo went from decent to excellent with a ton of help from the senior board members...thanks to all. (...even if you are not a senior member)
