Big Fat Harmonica Thing!

Good music. I liked the tune. The harmonica thang was good. Kind of Neil Youngish. Cool keyboard part at 1:28. Your lyrics are usually really good, but I thought they were just so-so on this one.

What's with the snare? Sounded like you were hitting a paper grocery bag. Listening more... I kind'a like it. I'm not too discriminating on drums.

Some words got buried. Listen for the last syllable of the word "invisible" at :56. there were a few others.

The peanut butter one is still my fav from you...

:D

ha ha ha

i thought you would like the snare cause it has plenty of snap!

this a "come on get over it" inspirational type of thing. its about a dead aquarium fish.

yeah some of the low notes came through cause i moved closer to the mic when i sang em. at least you know what the word was!

when is your next thing?

:)

Stop nagging me!!! :D

If I get enough time tonight, it'll be up tonight. Otherwise I'm afraid it's going to be next week. Too much non-music crap going on.

Harmonicus amongus!:D

Cool sound, how'd you record it,sounds good!
Nice mellow tune.

I dig it!

Best to you,
Pete

i tried a condenser but it was too detailed. too reedy.

so i put a 57 on it and there it was!

:)

Harp sounds great through the 57. I use a 57 for vocals... probably shouldn't, but I dig it.
Wish the vocal in this were up, and sung with more feeling. But I do like the harp, nicely melodic and emotive.
Drums...could really drive the beat if played with more authority. This song could move along nicely with kick, snare, hat, and bass grooving.
I dig the 'berries, have followed them since the infamous service station incident back in '63.
:D

Was that them? :D
Nice harp BTW. Cool song....very 60's sounding...especially that loose snare drum.

woooo!

for the first time theres no big timing probs!

i fired the drummer (me) and used my zoom drum machine!

drum machines are way too high impact so i gutted it with a very special magic box: a very tone dog. yes i ran the drum machine through the very tone dog and thats why it sounds like a cheap little beatbox!

i could have left more meat in the drums for more authority and less grocery bag! i did go through the sounds and found the loosest snare... i dont undertand why the choked sound is so prevalent.

mkg i know what you mean. this is another song in my low range and i just cant put the oomph in there. i will find a different range for another tune and try for some high notes!

60's sounding??? help me i am stuck in the past!!!!!!

what i want to do in the future is get a dr sample and sample my drumset and sequence the part. then i will have my sound but not the crappy timing.

i have spent years trying to develop the drums and i thought id have it by now but i guess if you dont have it then you dont have it...

i dont understand the 'berries reference

glad yous liked the harmonica its one of my old specialties from my days as a bob dylan wannabe!

:p

Here's the admittedly esoteric reference (Lt. Bob got it)...
Rolling Stones became known as just "Stones"...
Rolling Dingleberries therefore= "berries"...
Around '63 several Stones took a much-publicized public leak at a gas (petrol) station in England...helped cement their "bad boys" image. They went to court, were fined, got publicity, etc.
So I just substituted berries for Stones.
And there you have it.
I really do dig your song, btw...I just like them old school drum sounds...wham/pop/ka-ching!

oooooooooooh!

ok!

i prefer the real drum sounds and i cant wait to get a dr sample so i can do my own sound but be in time!

until then i can try to leave some more oomph in the canned drums. the very tone has 6 steps for eviscerating any sound and i put it all the way at 6. being an extremist it seemed like the right thing to do...

:p

Interesting moody song. Kind of a cross between Neil Young and the Traveling Wilburies (sp?)

I like the vocal but I think the vocal is a little too far back in the mix. Maybe some more volume and/or mid-high eq.

The harp is okay. Very basic but at least the notes fit the song (unlike a lot of Dylanesque first-position harp playing that one hears). You might want to compress the harp a bit more.

Hey Jeap,

Pretty solid tune. I can't decide about the drums but, I've so many drum issues myself that I'm in a thin glass house and refuse to toss stones.

Vox could use some more emotion. Maybe try singing up after the first break? The sound of the vox almost gives the impression of detachment or sloth and this vibe contradicts the lyrics. A touch more energy would help imho.

LI_Slime mentioned some more compression on the harp. I think he might be on to something. Performance and placement are totally there. I've never tried to track a harmonica. It strikes me that it would be a beast of a task.

Certainly glad I listened to your song.

Peace,

Theron.

li slim - the rolling dingleberries is a play on rolling stones and traveling wilburys!

for those of you that dont know a dingleberry is a piece of poop!

the harmonica thing is pretty easy really. 57 and play like 2 or 3 ft away from the mic. i have some chops i play but the song seemed to call for the textured smooth kind of thing. the bluesy wailing didnt really fit.

theron im trying to add more to my singing but havent had it click yet. i should pay more attention to keying but the riffs im using have already been worked out in certain keys and so i just sing in those keys. when i run out of riffs to build songs on ill probly think about range a little more...

everything has a lot of compression already but this is my first tune that doesnt have bad effects from it. i can turn this tune up for a high sound pressure level and it sounds pretty good so thats a big step up for me!

i guess all we can do is try to keep improving!

thanks all!

:)

im ordering a dr sample for the drums and hopefully i will have a much better sound soon!

didn't read the other replys

you write some cool tunes..

I wasn't crazy about the harmonica frequencies, especially when the song first starts, but I like the voice.. The lo-fi drums are pretty 'interesting' sounding.. The vocals were too low imhop.. I would definitely raise the vocals..

all of your songs I have listened to so far were quite cool..

I like your style..

Jeap - Dude...don't hide that voice. (Move Vox Up NOW!!) :D

I can't offer any mix advice other than that. I downloaded it, but I'm still having some trouble making out words. I'm sure they're good. (Let us hear 'em?).

That's the only criticism I have...not enough vox. (Everybody's always telling me to turn my Vox DOWN, so consider this a compliment).

-take care,
-chris

yeah!!!!

they been telling me to turn the voice down and so now ppls wants it up!

ha ha ha its ok i will find the middle ground sometime...

the drums will improve once the sampler arrives. i dont know if it will be easy to use or a pain... the drum machine is pretty easy to program.

the words are

take a step into the future
pretend that youre invisible
pain doesnt last forever
love is never in vain

or something like that. i think those would be the parts most difficult to understand. part of the prob with the vocal level is theres a boominess to the voice that became apparent at higher level. im working on fixing that.

the thing im happiest with is the fact that i can turn this tune up loud and it sounds ok. theres no pumping of compression or really bad sounds. i thought the bass was gonna suck but in the end it turned out pretty solid so i guess you never can tell til youre finished!

:)
