Currently I play a Pearl Masters MMX rock/fusion set. This set has an overall tight/warm sound to it. I'm looking for a change of pace and have been listening to a lot of Zeppelin lately. :p This just made me wonder about the Ludwig Maple Classic set, with the 26" bass, etc. Anyone have any on-hand experience with these remakes?

Build your own!

I did.

I built a kit with a pair of 16" x 28" Kicks, a 12"x15" rack tom (mounted on a snare stand between the kicks) and a 14"x18" and 16"x20" Floor toms.

I LOVE this kit, and everyone who has seen and heard it have just freaked out over it.

You could build a 26" for probably about $250-$300 or so.

This link is Drum Supply House. It's owned by Andy Foote. I always push DSH, because when I decided to build my kit in 1997, Andy went way above and beyond for me in helping me choose shells.

Go for at least a 16" depth, and get a 10-ply thick shell.

To really get the thump out of it, you will need two mic's - one on the mallet spot, and one out in front - but man, it will thump BIG TIME!

Here's a page iwth pictures of my drumkit.

Ugh. You have Muffl's in them.

Those drums are ridiculously big. Heh. Big drums intimidate me.

I had Muff'ls in them because I was triggering at the time.
My Bass player was playing with his monster rig, and it was too loud to mic the kit to get the sound that I wanted during band practice.

He had eight 15" speakers (a pair of Community sound 4x15"'s) driven with 3,000 watts. Obviously, we practiced with earplugs on at the time....but man...that thing sounded and FELT like you were standing next to a Freight Train running at top speeds.

Tim . . . Bonzo would be proud. Great Kit.

Thanks.

I built them based on Bonzo's first endorsement kit. Carmine Appice got him an endorsement with Ludwig, and that was the setup he used. That set is now owned by Paul Thompson, who was the drummer in Roxy Music and Concrete Blonde.

Bonzo was pretty much the reason I wanted to play drums.

I'll comment here because I play a set of original maple Ludwigs (late 60's/early 70's era) with a *24"* bass drum, not 26". I cannot confirm the sound of the new Ludwig kits, tho, but thought I'd put in my $.02. This particular configuration is a 13", 14", 16" rack and floor toms with of course the 24" bass drum.

The 24" bass drum simply has more of an undeniably full, "big kahuna" sound than smaller bass drums when mic'd live although the attack is a bit more elusive to achieve in recording situations. I've gotten alot of positive, enthusiastic comments on the bigger live sound by fellow musicians and soundtechs.

In the link below are some clips of some mostlyinstumental songs I recorded. I wrote and performed all instruments with the same drumset on with all the same recording equipment:

Man Tim, that really is a sweet kit. I can hear those kick drums just a flappin' now...I bet those things stomp!

Love the single rack tom setup, the simpler the better in drumming.

Finally, a real mans kit!!!!!!!!!!! Awesome kit Tim! I'm so tired of all these pussies with their 18" kicks and their 10,12,14 bullshit! Then they wonder why their drums don't sound big. Big drums kick ass! I currently have a 10x14,16x16,16x18,14x24 set up but I want a bigger kick, probably a 26". and then 18x18 and 18x20 floor toms.

Cobradenim....
You should really be more careful about who you slag on.
I happen to play small toms. In fact, I play exactly the sizes you mentioned.
And that would somehow make me a pussy?
Are you in the habit of calling ex Green Berets pussies?
I'd say your comment makes you an ignorant buffoon. But then, you're probably 12 years old and play in a punk band, or some mediocre band like Jet or the Vines.
You need to grow up, slick.

I'm entitled to my opinion. You like those small toms? Fine. I don't care. Fact is, Small drums cannot sound big.
The comment "an ignorant baffoon?" I think YOU need to grow up. Ex Green Berets, Ex Marines, Jocks and Navy Seals all have Big heads and need to CHILL OUT! You all act like 12 year old bullies on recess getting all bent out of shape because someone called you a name. Besides, did I call YOU a name? No, so shut the fuck up! And even if I did, SO WHAT DUDE! And quit trying to intimidate people! You're no beter than anyone else. Oh, and by the way, is your kit pink? With those sizes, It should be!
