I am thinking about getting BFD but im not sure if you can make drums for a whole song. I was wondering if you could or not. Can somebody who has BFD answer this for me?

please excuse my ignorance but what is BFD??

lol an abreviation for Big Fat/Fucking Drummer???

I jest.................what is it, drum software

Drums for a whole song? You mean like it would only do drums for the first 10 seconds or something? Err, no, it will put out as many drum samples as you tell it to.

You can absolutely make an entire song with BFD (Big Fuckin Drums). It's a drum sample module played via midi. What you play are actual extremely well recorded samples. Long story, it sounds incredible. I've done tons with it.

If you're good at programming, no one can tell the difference between BFD and a live drummer. Best drum library I've seen.

Would I be able to make my own drumming beats rather than having to use what they already have?

I was also wondering if I would have to have a keyboard of some sort to make my own drum beats on it. What other options are there to make my own drum beats on BFD?

All you would need is a basic midi controller of some kind. Sure, you could use the mouse to draw in hits and velocity, but I promise you that would be a huge pain in the ass.

That´s not true. Any serious drummer can tell if a the drum beat is programmed or not...

i have bfd and a couple of midi keyboards. i would strongly suggest that you use a good electronic drum kit as your controller. it's a pain in the ass using a keyboard and there are alot of things that i just can't do with my fingers. also, trying to play dynamic sounding drums on a keyboard just does'nt work that well. if you're good at programming and don't mind spending the time, then that's another option.

i find alot of the typical rock beats very difficult to play on a keyboard. even when i do pull it off, the dynamics are way off and i have to go back and edit individual note velocities............then try to program rolls because i can't play them with my fingers. it's a pain in the ass!

What software would let me use the mouse to draw in hits and velocity? I dont care if its a pain in the ass as long as it sounds good.

you would do that in your sequencing/recording software like cubase, sonar, etc. the midi track that you create with either a mouse, a midi keyboard, or e-drums will control bfd, which is essentially a sampler/sound module.

your host software will need to support vsti plugins and have midi capabilities. personally, i like cubase.

just in case you don't know about them, take a look as DFHS and EZDrummer also.

I know about those but dfhs takes up way too much space and my computer isnt that great. Ive looked at ezdrummer too and it seems a little limited to me.But anyways I write my songs mostly on Guitar Pro 5 and I was wondering if i could just export the drums to a midi file and use that with BFD. Would that work?

The best way to go about it is to load BFD as a vsti plugin in your recording software and use your software's piano roll / midi editor to create the drum hits that will trigger BFD. Alternately, you can create midi patterns and import them to BFD's Groove Librarian. It's just a couple of banks of midi patterns. The patterns can be triggered via midi.

BFD will load your system down pretty heavy too. I am running it on an older machine though with only 768mb ram, 1.4 ghz cpu, and a partition on my second hard drive dedicated to bfd's samples.
