these are entirely different companies...correct???

i keep hearing great things about the beyer m201 for snare...and all i can ever seem to find is the beyerdynamic m201

Just to add to this a little, you probably don't want the current Beyer M201TG model. I have not tried it, but the word from friends who have is that it's not the same as the vintage M201 (especially the one with the Tuchel connector).

Shop on Ebay. The M201 typically goes for around $200 or so. You can also use the Studer Revox M3500 (it's just a rebranded M201).

Incidentally the Beyer M201 is a dynamic mic. :D

There's nothing wrong with the new M201. It's a fantastic mic that works well on all types of sources.

I haven't used the vintage version you speak of, but the M201TG that I have is a fantastic mic. By far my choice for snare...

It would be interesting if someone could post clips of both versions for comparison.

alright, thanks for the help...

just seemed like two different companies...or maybe the cheaper quality versions from the same company, i.e. epiphone, or the shure PG series...

I didn't say there was anything wrong with it. Just that it's not the same as the vintage one, and most of the folks I know who recommend the M201 on snare ALWAYS make sure to emphasize they're suggesting the old model and not the new one. Which to me suggests that if he's looking for the classic sound of the M201 on snare, the TG model fails to deliver as completely as the older model.

Again, I haven't tried it myself (the new model) but I have tried the old one and it sounds absolutely wonderful. It's on my short list of mics to get.

If you haven't tried the new version then why are you casting aspersions on it?

Jesus, some people.

OK, you know what? Let me clarify my posts before this gets out of hand.

I have several friends who own studios and have Beyers for snare.

I do a lot of work with one in particular.

I've used the vintage 201 in his studio but not the TG, simply because the 201 sounds great on the snare.

I trust his opinion on mics as he is a professional engineer.

He uses the vintage 201 on snare every time, and the TG model only comes out if another mic is needed on something else. Otherwise it stays in the closet.

The poster suggested he wanted it for snare. I merely suggested he probably didn't want the TG model then. I can attest to the fact that the vintage 201 sounds great.

That's not casting aspersions. I didn't say the mic sucked. If you really want me to I'll go over there this weekend and mic up the fucking snare with the TG and listen for myself. Then I'll come back and post my thoughts firsthand. Is that better?

I would think it wise to refrain from telling people stuff like this when you have admittedly stated you have not used either one. Just my opinion. Just like my opinion that the new M201 does a damn fine job on snare.

ok so now we've established this...

who is selling it at a good price??

I have used the original 201, as well as the Revox branded 3500.

Nobody reads anymore, apparently. I'm done with this thread  .
