I dunno about automating it with Midi. I tried to find something about it in the help files, but they might as well have written it in German. What you can do is automate it with envelopes for pan and volume. When you bring up the audio edit window, under view select show "dynamic events" you can select volume or pan or M-points (still haven't figured out what those are 
) with the menu on the left. ctl click with the pencil tool to create a point, then drag it with the pencil. Hope this helps. I'm am pretty new to Cubase myself, I like it, it defintly is a vast program, but it is hard to understand how to make it all happen.
