Better / worse with age

Funny how things change. I was reading through a few old guitar magazines (yes I keep and catalogue them) and I was reading about how Slash was overrated, Mick Mars suck, Eddie is God.

Then I pulled out my new issues, Slash is now a guitar god, Mick Mars is revered and Eddie well besides needing to sober up is the father of all the countless wankers who think playing fast = good.

So question is:

Who has gotten better with age or finally gotten the respect they deserve &

Who has declined has time has gone by?

Jeff Beck and Adrian Belew are doing the best playing of their careers now I think. They both get overlooked these days.

And with every passing year, Eddie plays with less and less fire.

I am not sure what you mean by this but Eddie was good...

Point is Edward (for better or worse) sent countless guitar players to the woodshed to work on tapping, playing trills, scales and anything else to play fast. What is sad is people forget some pretty tasty solos (Running with The Devil, When it's Love) and just focus on Eruption.

Also I think people look down on Eddie because everyone and their dog can play Eruption now. Ok, not everybody because it does take a little practice and Eddie isn't everyone's cup of tea, but you get the point. Chances are in every bar in every town in the US there is some cat that can play it note for note, twice the speed and behind the back. Been there done that.

Edward may not be playing with the same fire, or he may not be growing on the guitar anymore. The Edge falls into the same catagory after reverting back to his pre-90's sound.

Most of the musicians that can really *move* an audience have a few years under their belts. Younger musicians can frequently balls-out PLAY, but that rarely moves any but the younger listeners.

One more time.

Jeff Beck.

He's got a vocabulary now that his seventies stuff doesn't even come close to.

Ture... you can play Hendrix, but that doesn't mean you sound like Hendrix. Anyone can play the notes but not everyone can master the soul behind them.

Then again, just because you have Eddie's gear doesn't mean you'll sound like Eddie. But more people have successfully copped his sound than Hendrix's.

copying a sound or style is pretty easy. try writing some tunes that anyone will give a shit about. not easy.

jeff beck is still amazing. hopefully he'll come to atlanta again.

bill frisell maintains a high level of playing.

nels cline gets better all the time.

EVH is basically retired, so of course he isn't what he once was.
