i have the 52 but i was wondering if i should have gotten the d112
which on do you like more?

Either one is useful. The Beta 52 seems to sound best just inside the vent hole in the front head. The D112 seems to like to be inside the drum close to the batter head.

If I only had one, I would get the D112. It is useful for more things than the 52 is.

I have both and ask myself the same question every time I track drums

could you name some of those things that the d112 can do that the 52 cant do

horns, distorted git, standup bass, very occasionally vox.
all things i would almost never use a b52 on.

i read that you can get a pretty good sound out of a stand up bass with a 52..havent tried it yet so i cant say nothing....
i miced up a bass cab with my 52 and got a pretty good sound out of it..

Yo Elicantu! There's nothing a D112 can do that a Beta 52 *can't* do, but a bunch of things I think it does better. It is a dedicated low frequency mic, not a kick drum mic. It was designed for standup bass, which it does very well. For certain voices, it rocks as a vocal mic, including a few of the female persuasion. It is a pretty good bass cab mic, not a great one. It's a good live mic on french horn, trombone, and even cornet. Excellent for the hole on Djembe or congas. Tympani, even the bass string side of a live piano. So- it's pretty good on anything that is low frequency, and it flatters some midrange sources. I wouldn't probably use it for a piccolo. Might work for a harmonica, who knows? The D112 isn't a bad all around dynamic mic.-Richie`

just prefer the d112 on bass, esp standup.
not that a 52 won't work.

im mainly gonna use my 52 for kick drum...probably 99% of the time..
did i make a mistake in buying this mic instead of the d112?
considering they both cost around the same

The 52 sounds surprisingly good on my upright, a great combination of finger attack and the fundamental note. I thought the SM7b was my go to mic for upright until I tried the 52.

I am not in love with the way it sounds on kick yet. I rented an AT e602 or something like that for awhile and it was closer to the sound I like. A drummer friend used a D112 on some tracks he recorded for me and I like the sound he got, but he would sound great through 2 cups and a string......

I use my Beta 52 on my kick and it sounds unbelievable. I borrowed a D112 off of my buddy, who uses one on his floor tom and one close to the beaters on the inside of his kick, and I wasn't that impressed with it's floor tom reproduction or its kick reproduction. I used it live, though, and it was awesome. Either way, each mic is great. You won't be kicking yourself about anything.

No, you didn't make a mistake. It's really personal taste. With a little EQ, you can get them to sound similar.

The biggest difference is the B52 has the lower mids scooped out for you. This is why the D112 seems a little more usefull for other things, it's not pre-EQ'd for kick.

just a +1 to most of the things said here--either one is a perfectly capable mic. you'll find folks who are happy with either or both. i've got a beta 52 and it does quite nicely on my old ludwig kick.

like farview said, it seems to have some of the low mids scooped, so that's one less eq point i have to make in the mix.....i just position it so i get enough thump and slap and compress later as needed.

cheers,

Not that it matters but I prefer the D112. I put it inside the kick close to the beater and then put an AT4033 (pad engaged) on the outside of the kick. Then I cover the kick drum with a heavy blanket. The result is a huge kick sound.

does anyone have any clips of kick sounds they got with these mics and tell me how you miced it up
