Hi. I would like some advise from the knowledge base here. I really enjoy reading all the wisdom. I have a 20x24 room where I have equipment and I do my recording and tracking in the same room (for now). Its working ok but I'm always looking for the best possible configuration with budget given. Im learning as I go and would like some feedback on the way Im using my gear and what Im doing right or wrong please. I have a P4 with 1gig of ddr pc2100 ram and use Nuendo. I have a motu 24i soundcard. Im running all my mikes into a Soundtracs Topax 32-8 and going direct out to the motu. I also have a Radikal SAC 2.2 controller that im using to control Nuendo. Im using 2 AT4033's for drum overheads a sm57 on snare and seinhieser 602 kick mic. Im fairly happy with my drums considering the room and its 8ft ceiling. I go direct in with bass, and Have a peavey 5150 combo for guitars. I use a mxl mogami v69 and the 4033 for vocals. Question one any suggestions on how to get a fat guitar sound with a big stereo spread. I generaly use a sm57 and double the track in nuendo and then try different panning tecnices. I dont know if its my boxed in 5150 cab or my style of recording but I get a pretty thin sound. I have waves platinum and many other plugins to work with. Also would my vocals benifit from a seperate preamp or are the Soundtracs preamps good enough. Im thinking of trying a seperate preamp. Mabye somone could share some vocal tecniques for me to try when recording. I do mostly rock recording old and newer alternative. I know I seem to be asking alot but im trying to find out if im at least heading in the right direction. Thanks in advance

One way to get a bigger guitar sound is to use a room mic and compress it quite a bit. Instead of copying the track and panning record the part twice. That works much better.

The August Homerecording mag has a feature (50 tips) on recording guit. Go buy it.
