hey guys, i'm new and i was wondering what the best methods of mounting studio foam to walls is?

Welcome! The best way IMO is t-tacks. But, are you mounting foam to your home studio? You don't need foam. All they will do is lower the high frequencies. They will actually make your room sound worse! You should buy/ or make some bass-traps before you get foam.

thanks for the advice. the only reason I have foam is cuz a friend of mine had some extra that he didn't need, so he gave it to me. would my foam be useful for an el cheapo vocal "corner"? (I don't have room for a full booth)

and yes it is a home studio

I bought some DOW protection board from lowes and then put the studio foam on top of that. So I tacked up the boards and then used double sided tape to attach the aurelex studio foam. And that way If I need to move the whole thing it attached to a back board and don't have to take every single piece off. And there's only 4 holes in the wall as apposed to a sh*t ton ha.

I agree with Fritz though^^^ bass traps first. Only reason I even have my studio foam is because it came free with some stuff I bought a while back

Nah, just save the foam. If you really get into audio, you can save it for later. Your vocals will sound best in a room. You have to find that sweet spot where it really shines.

Foam can be used to remove flutter echo...like if your room is basic sheet-rock all around, and you clap you hands and hear any kind of flutter/echo...then a *few* pieces in key areas can remove that for you, but don't go crazy and deaden everything with foam...you will kill the room.

There are glues that will work, but you can use silicone adhesive caulk (Home Depot), as it won't rip the sheet-rock as badly as glue if/when you remove the foam.

Once all the garbage can comment runout, foam is not the best solution to studio acoustic problems, however it is useful to take away some of the top end reflections as long as you don't use too much and kill the high end in the room. For example I use a strip (about 450 mm, 18" high) of eggshell type foam around the drum area about 5' from the floor to just tame the cymbal splash a little. The high end slap was a little fierce after we constructed the drum corner. You can see it on my web site photos, the right hand side had not been fitted when the photo was taken as I had run out of foam.

To mount the foam you can staple the foam to the wall with a staple gun if its plaster.
Or use some masonite or thin ply sheet and glue the foam to that, then mount the sheet to the all using picture hooks. This is a good way as you can take it down to liven up the room again if you want.

Cheers
Alan.

Mounting foam is illegal in my state.
So is mounting sheep and an assorted vast array of other woodland creatures.

Reminds me of that old saying: I'm a mountain man and I like mountain........... oh never mind:o

Mount foam?

Is that the mount from which Dave delivered his teachings?

Like Sinai, but different.

Yup it is written ..... "that after a hardy meal DAVE ascended to the top of Mount Foam to which he said *I am famous DAVE* with a loud and thunderous voice so that all the corners of the world could hear and tremble with delight".
