On the advice of everything i've read and all the recording techs down at MARS in Austin, I bought the 424MKIII Iwent through the manual and now i can record and playback,etc... How do I make it all sound like it could be played on the radio? Basically, now i know how it works but i would like any kind of advice or tips for gettin' it on!

Howdy Buck!
Now that ya red the manual read it again, and reread it until you understand every thing in it.One thing your manual stresses is signal path. You have to know with out a doubt where the signal is comming from and where it's going to, before you can do anything with it.

If you don't have a good book on home recording get one.If I may suggest one (the musicans guide to home recording) by Peter mclan and Larry Wichman. Ive learned a great deal from this book, and also a great deal from my 424 manual.

I don't what other equipmemt your using but what ever it may be learn every thing about it you can.
HOPE i WAS OF SOME HELP.

Do you know of a book that talks specifically about the Tascam 424 with home recording? Cause that's what I have also and the more help the better.

Hi EL

I dont know of any book that is specifically geared tword the 424 other than the 424 manual, If you have a manual I think its a very good one.

The book I mentioned to Buck ,has a chapter about portastudios in it.

Iam sure if you post a question about a 424 book you might find one.

jimimac, thanx for the tip, but i've read through this manual a gazillion times and as i play w/ the 424 the better it sounds. hey el barto, i just ordered a book from musicians friend "using your portable studio" product# 901058f it makes specific references to tascam, fostex, yamaha,...etc. it is written in musicians terms it reads easy and it helped a lot more than the manual did. one more question for now...the manual in the 424 mainly focuses on using the buss-l and buss-r recording techniques when i find it a lot easier to use the direct function so i can't get confused with track-2 buss-r goes on track-4 ya da da... is there some reason for the in-depth discussion in the manual for the l-r buss technique instead of the direct method? isn't it easier to just pan the sound during direct mode than mess-around with panning all the way to the left and right on l-r buss? or am i missing something?

Hi Buck

As far as I know, the difference between buss mode and direct mode is (and anybody corrects me if I'm wrong , several weeks ago that I don't use my portastudio) : in buss mode you can combine , for example, four instruments in two tracks, having two on the left and two on the right, and still you have two tracks available for further use. But in direct mode, every input is tied to a track, not several inputs to one track, so you only can record four instruments at most (unless you do some bouncing). Anyway, read about it in the TASCAM manual once more, I think it should be explained there.

Thanks for the suggestions, I ordered Musician's Guide to Home Recording and Using Your Portable Studio...plus one other, all from Amazon. God bless that website.
