Best way to get 8 ins?

I am trying to build a home studio on my limited budget as a student,
and I want to record on my PC.
I need to figure out the cheapest way to get 8 inputs from mic to recorded track.

So I need 8 channels of preamp and 8 channels of audio interface.

is there a unit that combines them that would be cheaper than an 8 channel pre and for example a used MOTU 2408 or something?

whats the cheapest way to do this?
 
assuming you are talking pc here. (i'm not a mac guy).
i would suggest you look at a yamaha mg mixer that a lot of folks here like
for a small budget and something like a delta sound card. terratec also have
sound cards with 8 ins. total cost prolly 400 bucks or less.
it would help to post your computer confign. you will need a free pci slot in your pc. and i would advise a pc at least 1.3 ghz (preferably 2ghz)
with 512 ram and fast hard drives. eg: an amd athlon or intel equivalent.
(for multitrack recording software suggestions, just search underr my name)
 
theres an Aardvark Q10 in the Free Ads section for sale......
 
Presonus Digimax LT. perhaps not the cheapest, but works really well as a front end to the Host DAW.
 
My PC is 2.4 ghz, 512ddr, windows xp.
I use it as a personal computer too, I wish i could relegate it to just recording but...
it's the only one I got.

I'm currently using Vegas 3.0 for multitrack recording.
 
You might be able to find a Layla 24/96 cheap, since Echo just came out with the Lalya 3G. I use two of the Layla 24/96's (giving me 16 ins) with Vegas 5 and it rocks.

I'm in almost the same boat. . . 1 computer for 2 uses. Here's what I did. Depending on the size of your hard drive, make 3 partitions. Two 12 (or so) gig partitions and a third parition with everything you have left over. Install Windows on both of your 12 gig partitions, and use your third partition for all your storage (i.e., mp3's, recording files, office documents, etc.)

In your first windows partition, install everything you use for general computer usage. . .office, games, etc.

In your 2nd windows partition, install only your DAW programs. Treat it as a separate computer used only for recording.

On your DAW Windows installation, you can tweak it to get the most performance out of your computer

Are you guys with fairly new computers having that much trouble? I have ran over 20 tracks with tons of crap going w/o a problem, and my computers 2 years old. I also have mozilla, thunderbird, etc going in the background.

hmmmm....I'm curious.

Sorry, I'm not that familiar with Mac stuff. Haven't really used one of those since high school, which was a while back.

To answer NL5's question: I haven't had problems with too many programs running and that kind of thing - I just liked the idea that I could have 2 windows installations and totally tweak one of them for recording. I've always partitioned my hard drives, though, so when I do a re-install I don't have to back all my stuff up on a different computer.
