Best way to apply effects before mixdown

Hello,

I have 13 songs I'm getting ready to mix down on Cool Edit 1.2a. I want to apply effects to the snare and vocal on each song and had the following questions:

1. Is there a log of which effects have been applied to a wave file?
2. Can effects be undone after saving the session?
3. Is there a way to preserve the raw wave file just in case I find out a week
after listening that I don't like the effect that I applied to a certain track?

Thanks!

1. Not that I'm aware of. I create a .txt file to keep track of what I've done.

2. If the effects are applied via the Effects Rack or Busses, then yes. If they are applied to the individual tracks in Edit view, then no (I may be wrong on this one).

3. Yes. Don't work on the original files, use a copy of them instead. I can't count the times this has saved my butt <g>.

Keeping a log is the engineer’s job. You should be making up track sheets. It is the most basic form of note keeping in a studio. It is just a paper and pencil table of boxes which represent each track. Pretty much like calendar. You can make notes on what each track is, what it had done to it, and any special settings you may have used.

I know when you save a session, it remembers all of this for you but, it makes for a quick visual reference.
