Unless you're established, and can draw in crowds who are paying for tickets, this is pointless.

Paying to rent a theater for a performance is something I'll never do as an indie. I can book bars/clubs etc, and get paid to perform. Paying someone so I can perform, on the hopes of breaking even with ticket sales is not very bright.

But if you're established, and you know you can fill the venue... more power to you. However, there isn't anyone on this forum able to do that.

I've found in the Detroit area that there are open mics and showcases going on almost every day of the week. Some are free to perform while others require you to sell tickets to the venue. This is a way for them to generate money as well as sell drinks for the place they are throwing the show.Sometimes it seems pointless but as a new artist trying to get your name out its a good way to start. Its a good way to establish relationships and network so you can possibly get on mixtapes and work with more established artists.go out pass out some cards, get a myspace page so people can go and get more info about you.Make snippet EPs to pass out.Anything that will make your name recognizable.I don't know how many times I've been out and people recognize me from shows and myspace.People are more open to things that they are familiar with. Some of the open mics include Alvin's on Cass,Club Topaze,Club Celebrity,The Bullfrog Bar and Grill and numerous showcases that come up from time to time.Anytime you can get your music heard is not a waste of time.
