There is a thread on the guitar boards that's very interesting and has opened my ears to some new music.

"...who are your favorite underrated guitarists of ALL time (past and present) ? I'm talking about the ones who really played tasty stuff that made songs work, yet never got the recognition they deserve (although maybe they weren't seeking it, we can give it to them)."

I say we apply this to DRUMMERS. I know there are a lot of drummers who are innovators in their own right, but get no love.

Jason (dont know last name) in a band called Diecast. I think he plays the most brutal crazy double bass I have ever heard.

John Cantrell...went to school with him and hadnt heard from him in years.....i learned to play guitar playing along with him......u out there dude?....

under-rated drummers.............I'd say that Mark Zonder of Fates Warning and Nick D'Virgilio of Spock's Beard have to be under-recognized if not under-rated............those guys are both great.

I'm not a huge fan of metal, but the guy from Fear Factory (I think Raymond Herrara) is unbelievable. Really tight double bass.

Mike

What do you guys think of Blues Travelers drummer. I think he´s great but now and then I think he´s too generous whith the crash cymbals, eh?

Anyone ever heard No Means No? That drummer kills me.
oh my god i thought i was the only no means no fan in the world.....i think there drummer is incredible some of the stuff he does.......WOW!

Nick Mason, Phil Rudd, Narada Michael Walde.

Maybe not underated, perhaps under appreciated. Maybe neither.. or both.

mike bordin "faith no more", incredibly beautiful simplicity... this guy writes every note with the greatest care....

joe morello, the king of all time signatures that aren't 4/4

Underated drummers

Bev Bevan ...

Ringo ...

Ian Mosely ...

Ringo ...

Roger Taylor ...

who else...?

oh yes, and Ringo

On the other hand, his (Ringo's) "underrated drumming" has been quite overdiscussed through the years. Rock solid time keeper, though, and a most tasteful simplicity.

Bruce in Korea

going out on a limb here, but imho, ringo is the most overated drummer i can think of

Oh My God. That woman from the White Stripes is, perhaps, the worst drummer I have ever heard on wax.

I concur

Rob Hirst, Midnight Oil.

I have always felt that Australian drummers are the tastiest players around.
Proof
Along with Rob:
Phil Rudd ( !!! we all learned to play from him)
Andy (?) Fariss (inxs)
even Jerry Speiser from Men at Work was a good un for a pop guy (cmon you guys all know every fill these guys have done. They are like the Nigel Olsons of the 80's)

(Virgil Donato is australian yes? )

but Rob is still #1 in my book after Stewart Copeland

nP

(ps. forgive my misspelling of any names up there)

overseas: which Roger Taylor?

the guy from Queen or the guy from Duran-Duran?
