Actually, I'm in the market for a tele. Never owned one before. Everybody knows I'm partial to Melancons, but what other options have I got? Being mainly a Strat guy, I'd really like to get one with a fore-arm and tummy cut, and I don't think Fender makes them that way.
Would I be better off building one, since they are probably the easiest electric to build? Suggestions?

I have a '52RI and love it to death. Unfortunately I modded it to the modern wiring configuration (neck/neck and bridge/bridge). I am going to mod it back though soon (neck with treble roll off/neck/bridge) because that treble roll off is just the most amazing sound for backup guitar ever. It sounded like crap by itself to most of my friends, but when I dropped it behind their guitars........oh damn ;)

The American Series Telecaster is a top-notch guitar. They're somewhat "modernized" -- individual bridge saddles, and such -- but they're slightly more versatile than the reissues. (No offense, Outlaws! :) )

If that's too pricey for you, then look at the Standard Series (a.k.a. "MIM", or "Made in Mexico"). They're solid, consistent pieces. Some folks find the pickups to be not as clear as the AS pickups, but they're reasonably cheap to replace.

Personally, I play an American Standard (predecessor to the current American Series) that has been pretty heavily modified.

If you're interested in Telecasters, you should definitely check out the Telecaster Discussion Page Reissue at http://www.tdpri.com.

If price is a factor, I've never seen anything that beats a Jay Turser. I've had mine for about 6 months now and I couldn't be happier with it. I paid $149.00 US$ and another $70.00 for a gator hard case.

I did have to take it back for a little warranty work. The nut broke the first time I changed the strings. However, for that low price I don't mind a bit. It's got all the bright, biting or swampy tones you could want from a tele.

Also, it does have a contoured cut on the back. Not many choises in colors though.

I'd look into one of the semi-hollow F hole models. Dual humbuckers. Probably has a different sound than the typical Tele stereotype, but you never know, might be you.
