Hi,

I'm new here and thinking of getting a Tascam portastudio. I looking to get a cassette one, 8 track if possible but 4 is ok, that I can put finished tracks through to a cd burner or something, so I can give the cds of the parts for other band members to learn. If there is such a model can someone tell me what it is please? :)

Thanks

Will

Why a cassette model?

The DP-02 has facility for burning straight to CD.

Can I connect the DP01 without the cd burner with a seperate cd burner? Cua the one with the cd built in is a bit too expensive, I dont have that much to spend...

Its worth saving up to record digitally rather than on cassette. The DP01 has audio outs which would then plug into the CD burner's input - note the signal has been converted to analog at this stage.

if portability isn't an issue or if have a laptop you can always download audacity for free and use it to record while you save for something better.it's digital multitracking and you can burn the tracks on your pc and give to your bandmates.

So if I buy the Dp01 or Dp02 without the cd built in, I can plug it straight in to a cd burner? Or does a cassette model have this option? Sorry to sound like an idiot, but ive never used anything like this before...

Portability is preferred really, I've tried using my computer with audacity but its not exactly the best to use, its a bit slow at times and not in an ideal place to record.

DP-01, 02 have USB

Most of the digital portastudios can connect to a computer via USB. You can export tracks or the mix to your computer and burn a cd from there. Or make mp3's and tell your friends to get an iPod.
I had a DP-01FX that I just sold on eBay for under $200. I think I want it back now actually. The DP-02CF records to compact flash (no cd burner) whereas the DP-01/DP-01FX had a large hard drive. I bought my DP-01FX on eBay for $300 new a few years ago.
I'm thinking of trying USB interfaces such as the M-Audio Fast Track Pro or the Mobile Pre. I have not done computer recording before and I want to find out what near zero latency means. Can you still notice? The Fast Track Pro says it has NEAR zero latency direct hardware monitoring and the Mobile Pre says it has ZERO latency. Is there really a difference in latency between the two units? The latency issue with computer recording got me wondering about digital portastudios and if they have any latency (even minimal) since they are kind of like computers. Do they? Sorry to change the subject, but if anyone has any thougts on that please let me know.

+1 on this.

do NOT buy a cassette portastudio. in no more than a year you'll be cursing your decision and wishing you could go back and do it right the first time. the sound quality is horrendous. if you want a simple, low cost alternative just save a little more and get the digital version. trust us, you'll be much happier in the end.

Thanks for your advice guys...I decided to go with it and recieved in the post today a Dp01FX/cd off ebay, £115 with postage, an affordable price. Im getting on with it ok, so thanks again for helping me out!
