Hello all, I will be doing a lot of recording on my new LX-20 and was just wondering if anyone could give me some information on the best s-vhs tapes to use.
The unit came with the BASF standard 120 is this the type that I should stick with or are there better out there? Thanks in advance for any help..

Look a little further.....

I don't have time (at 20 cents a minute that is) to find this same thead topic, but it is here.

I think the general consensus is that the Maxell Profession SVHS tape is the best for ADAT.

Ed,

Are those "specific" ADAT tapes, are are those the very same Maxell Black SVHS-Pro tapes that you can find at most stores (Best Buy, Target) etc?

Thanks,
Elvis

NONONONONONO!!!!

That be the "Professional" Maxell's that you WON'T find at Walmart on sale.....:)

That's what I figured

Sonusman,

That's kind of what I figured...but I thought I'd ask just to see if by any chance it would be the case.

thanks for the response (I'm still working my way through my case of Quantegy's)

Actually though.....

I HAVE used non-professional quality SVHS tapes in ADAT's before. They will work, but, Alesis does not recommend them because generally the consumer quality tapes tend to wear out really fast, which could cause some significant damage to the tape heads.

This would only happen if you were using the tapes heavily, like you would during a CD production. But if you just need to archieve, or run a lot of tape for a session, then maybe transfer the tracks to want to better tapes afterwards, the consumer quality one's will hold up long enough to do that for you.

Anyway, I just would never commit any music that I care about to cheaper tapes. Quantegy is just the old Ampex brand, which I have had the most problems with. I have talked to other engineers who have had many problems with Ampex/Qauntegy tapes too, so be wary of heavy use. In fact, the only time I ever had a tape break on me inside an ADAT was an Ampex tape. Also, I don't have ANY drop out problems with the Maxell's, but many with the Ampex tapes.

The Maxell's are the best.

Thanks

Sonusman,

Do you have a good mail order source for those? I don't do REALLY heavy tracking, but at the same time, I'd really prefer to not have any tape problems that I could possibly avoid just by changing brands of tapes :)

Thanks,
Elvis
