Anything on the Johnny Cash American recordings (specifiacally "When the Man Comes Around")

or

"Patience" by Guns and Roses (and I am not even a fan. I own zero of their albums)

Like he said, mic at 12th fret.
2 faves ....68 Martin D28S Very full
63 Gibson LG3 Crisp and tight , even with lightgauge Elixer's

Each has unique character.
Also , use VERY LIGHT compression, to avoid "poppy, thumpy sound.

getting a great tone is a zen thing and you will have to experiment to get it right.

Don;'t judge the sound by what you hear on FM. Usually so squashed and overcompressed that it will mislead you. Listen to CD on your studio system.

...Tracy Chapman has a good tone; in the video for "Change" she plays a Fender acoustic. I know Fender isn't rated as highly as some others in the acoustic realm, but this does sound good.

Best,

The guitar on "Fast Car" sounds really good, if perhaps a tad too processed for my taste.

I like a bare bones acoustic, just a touch or reverb to help sit it back a bit. I'm not a big fan of chorus on acoustic unless it's in a dense mix. Before I bought any of my "good" guitars I recorded using a "Marlboro" acoustic I paid $25 bucks plus those mile things for. It was an "all wood" guitar though it didn't sound that good, didn't play good, but for some reason it went to tape (yes, tape) great and to this day two or three of those songs I used it on have some of the best acoustic guitar sounds I've gotten. You just never know. There's a singer songwriter named Lori McKenna, her latest CD "Bittertown" has some great natural uncolored acoustic guitar sounds, plus the songs are great which always helps.

I bought and downloaded Don Ross' new CD "This Dragon Wont Sleep" and I must say his guitar tone and sound is incredible.

You can hear samples here

Good stuff..(listen to This Dragon Wont Sleep sample)
