I now have a computer I can dedicate for studio use. What I need to know is what soundcard to buy. I have a 4 mic setup for my kit and would like to record them as seperate tracks and be able to add effects. Also wondering if I need a mixer in this process. Budget is definitely an issue. I have around $500 I can put into this project right now but don't want to limit myself from adding to it in the future. Any help is appreciated.

$500 just for the sound card, or do you already have the 4 mics?

Already have the mics. $500 for soundcard and mixer if needed. Or I would like to add on down the road; $500 for sound card now, $400 for mixer in 6 months. Thanks.

Hi, I think you might want to look at the Aardvark Direct Pro 24/96. It is a 4 in/6 out soundcard. It will allow you to record 4 tracks at a time onto your pc. And it enables up to 24 bit audio, so I hope this helps. Oh, this card runs at $500.

what about m audio´s delta 44 with 4 analogue ins and outs- seen @ www.musiciansfriend.com for 229,99!

money-wise i think there should be room left for a little mixer with some direct outs! ;-)

btw.: considering you don´t want to limit yourself for future upgrades you could also take a look at m audio´s delta 1010lt with 8 analogue ins and outs (among other features) for $ 279,99 street price

i myself use 2 computers for recording - one with a delta 1010lt and gigasampler and the other with a delta 1010 and cubase vst 5 - i´m pleased with m audio products.

cheers!

agreed regarding the delta44, great quality for little price! buying a 44 is'nt really limiting yourself for future upgrades since you can chain up to 4 delta 44's together....

here's the combo that I'd go with:

delta44 (~$200)
spirit e6 (~$300)

that's $500 and you'll get 4 high quality ins as well as a pretty good mixer with 6 pres that are probably much better than those in a behringer
