This gives rise to another vote for best solo...Man In The Long Black Coat.....Eric Bazillion.

That song is perfect. Simply perfect. Osborne's Vocal's are sooo clued in to the lyrics, the acoustic guitar and organ are exactly right for the atmosphere. The electric adds just the right stuff and they all sound just right. All the parts are serving a single purpose: to put you right inside that song. And my oh my how well it works.

That one is actually Rick DiFonzo, looking at the credits. WW plays some other electric guitars. The bends in that solo are amazing though. They take forever to get where they are going, but when they do they are just SO in the right place.

Actually, the solo I really like on that album is on Crazy Baby (which IS Eric Bazilian).

Everything she does is perfect. Have you seen her in the movie they made about the Funk Brothers, "Standing in the Shadows of Motown?" Simply incredable. She steals the show from some really amazing R&B singers, including Shaka-Kahn. She does two songs, "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted," and "Heatwave." She just NAILS it. Amazing.

the first solo i ever learned to play : george harrisons solo on 'something'. classic beatles.

i haven't played it for nearley 20 years, i pick up a guitar and play it. just like that, without thinking.
(and still i can't remember half of what i did last night :) )

Best Underwhelming

Lay Down Sally, Eric Clapton has the best, lack of intensity, no frills attached riffs. It's almost like he's in the hot tub sipping sparkling wine druming his fingers on the water surface.

I thought Harrison and Lennon swapped lead on Carry That Weight?

Dokken -Night by night
Slobberbone - Josephine
Zakk -No morem tears

gonna have to go with Steve Vai~some call it sleep
I think the most of the song is a solo, going from beautiful soulful slow single note discipline to amazingly agressive and on the verge of breaking away from making musical sence,my favorite"look at me,I can play guitar"song

My favorite guitar solo is by far five days in may from blue rodeo.
La grange from zztop is also a great one.

The thing I hate about these types of threads is that you always get the damned Chili Pepper fanatics to come out of their caves. Gawd.

Although not nearly a great guitarist, I still think that the solo in Sweet child of mine is a great one.

another one came to mind:
unforgiven/metalica

I'm not a fan of the newer metalica, but for some reason this is my favorite hammet solo.

I've only seen 1 person mention Mr. Steve Vai...

One of the first songs that comes to mind is "For the Love of God"

That song is more than just "wanking" or "blowing a load on the fretboard"...when I hear it he is speaking spiritually through his instrument, which I think is the highest level of musicianship, the ability to convey emotions. There is a story behind its recording, and I'm not entirely positive of the details, but from what I've heard he poured his heart and soul into that solo after not playing for 2 weeks...you can really HEAR that when you listen. Is it a great song? not neccessarily, is it a great solo, yes. some of you may disagree, but that song is a true statement in the history of rock guitar. Kind of like a great prizefighter leaving it all out there after 12 tough rounds...Vai will probably never be as popular as he wants to be (Jimi Hendrix), but his "mastery" of the instrument is clearly evident on that song...and yeah he knows a lot about music, but it aint about that sometimes...im sure he wasnt thinking the name of the mode he was playing when his fingers were flying...he was just letting his fingers speak to us...

-Steve

most probably far away from "the best solo" but nevertheless my favorites:

- wanted dead or alive, richie sambora (easy yeah)
- givin' up, dan hawkins (i believe... well, that dude from "the darkness" - these guys know how to play rockguitar solos)
- a lot of the stuff richie kotzen plays. he's one of the few players who actually HAVE the chops but are still able to play soulful and restrained.

and oh, I almost forgot: the "final countdown" solo. don't know the guy's name. kind of the orgasm of the song.
