Ya see, the thing is, that once you start a thread, you give it away. That means that you can't define the terms of what people can think is a good solo before hand because it stopped being your property when you hit submit.

If you are not of a certain age then you will not understand how perfect Cobain's solo's were for his time. After a decade of gunslinging axemen that put no more emotion in their solo's than a ham sandwich (see Nuno Bettencourt) Cobain's anti-guitar hero style was incredible and refreshing. I have to agree with Light on "The Colour and the Shape". The whole album is a shining example of innovative guitar playing.

"Big Love" - Lindsay Buckingham
"I Dream A Highway" - David Rawlings
"Nothing as it Seems" - Mike McCready

i dont really listen to the kind of music that has guitar solos in it, but i've always loved the solo at the end of stairway to heaven, even though its not technically difficult to play or anything, he makes every note count.

Mate im 26 and that maggot was in prime time when i was a teenager.
I learnt every song Nirvana Did on the guitar, Kurt is a lame ass,
Should of been shot for even contemplating buying a guitar, and yes so should have i for once thinking he was descent, but that was me following the cattle to the slaughter, now i do the slaughtering, the fact is these punk dicks cant do these grand solos. So they rely on image alone. They have no idea what it takes to master anything, and neither do you or anyone who supports these punk dicks. Any body can learn a fucking bar chord and move it up and down the neck, give me a break.

I see there are some people who have class, who have responded. Only they can understand what im talking about.
Thank you very much, you know who you are.

As you can see im new to this forum, this little thread of mine quickly weeds out the guitarists from the power chord losers.

If there are power chord losers out there who dissagree and can tell me what the mode no 3 of the HIROJOSHI is then please state it before abusing as i will only laugh otherwise.

Vernon Reid on "Cult of Personality".

DAMN YOU! I should have thought of that one. I mean, if you want to talk about an absolutely perfect combination of fit for the song and just MONSTER chops, that is IT.

"Cowards can never be moral."
M.K. Gandhi

What, no Carlos Santana? Black Magic Woman, and to mention the Drum solo firing back and forth with the geetar at Woodstock.

Carry That Weight - George Harrison
wow first person who i ever heard of that had the same taste in best solo ever! I actually heard somewhere that all three guitar playing beatles may have just traded off doing solos in that part of the song (kinda like a dueling guitars thing), but that may have just been a rumor.

I know it's not very technically challenging, but i still really like that solo!

Well Doogle, that would put you at 11 or 12 when Nirvana came out and 5 or 6 at the height of the metal years.

My comment about your age stands, not as a knock against your maturity (though I believe your second post here does that rather well), but to illustrate that your age prevents you from having experienced the utter exasperation at yet one more lightning fingered, spandex clad, robot.

You miss the point: they have no desire to do the grand solo's for the same reason that I have no desire to pull a passenger bus with a chain attached to my penis: it's pointless, painful, and proves nothing about my manhood.

As for me being a "power chord loser" and playing only barre chords, I play fingerstyle acoustic folk (some of which you can hear in the mp3 mixing section), but that doesn't prevent me from appreciating other forms of music in the same fashion that your choice of style apparently prevents you.

Pearl Jam (Mike McCready)- Alive
Smashing Pumpkins- Zero
Zakk Wylde- No More Tears
Ozzy- Flyin High Again (Wylde?)
Queen (Brian May)- Killer Queen
Megadeth- Countdown to Extinction
ZZ Top- La Grange (catchy, with lots of artificial harmonics)
Jimi Hendrix- All Along The Watchtower (the whole thing pretty much)
Guns n Roses- November Rain (the ending solo)

Just about anything from Mark Knopfler, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, David Gilmour, Duane Allman, Robert Cray, or Lousiana slide-man Sonny Landreth.

There's just too much to cover here, and it's all good!

Oh, You're just jealous because someone like Cobain could take something so simple and make every kid in America buy their records. I know he was a sloppy guitarist but hey, but nobody's heard of you!

Sadly, It doesn't matter how good you are. It's just a matter of being at the right place at the right time and who you know. Sometimes you can work really hard at something and nobody seems to care but then you can put absolutely no work into something and that's what people want to hear.

Take the Misfats for example. They're a Misfits tribute band that rewrites the lyrics to misfits songs to be about food (20 Eyes = 20 Pies ect, ect) and 3/4 of them are fat asses!! It's a gimmic! These guys have been in very good bands in the past (and playing different instruments) and they put this together for a joke and it's taken off! They've got a jazz guitarist/ music major playing drums, a Steve Harris style bassist playing guitar, a violinist as the singer and a punk rock bassist. They hardly rehearse but no one cares! They pack clubs all the time and they're entertaining! People always come to their shows and they get offers all the time to play on good bills because the promoters know that people will come to see them play. I get annoyed because I've spent alot of time writing songs, rehearsing trying to be the best that I can be with my band and then I see these guys get gigs left and right without even trying. I admit, It's frustrating but I go to the Misfats gigs because they are my friends and they're pretty good.

Now...

My favorite solo's are:
"Voices" -Rick Nielsen
"This House Is Rocking (With Domestic Problems)- Rick Nielsen

Nigel Tufnel's solo in Gimme Some Money by Spinal Tap. Hahaha, that solo cracks me up. Or his solo in the movie where he talks about "Expressing Himself in his solos". You know, the one where he uses the violin? Hilarious.
