Best recording for around 500 bucks?

I have the old pro tools digi001 but want to get something that works with a laptop or a stand alone recording unit for around 500 bucks. I would like it to have at least 2 of its own preamps. The MBOX 2 PRO looks pretty good to me, but I was wondering if someone thought there was more bang for your buck somewhere else. As long as it doesn't need a desktop computer to work I'm open to thoughts.....

Thank you,

Thanks. My heads spinning now hahaha. A quick question. How much better is the quality of 96khz sampling vs 44.1? Is it a great deal?

I recently switched from 96khz to 44.1khz and haven't noticed an audible difference. I did see a huge difference in cpu and dsp utilization. The switch freed up some much resources on the computer, it barely shows anything on the meter.

However, 96 vs. 44.1 will always be the ongoing debate.
