Solved Best Project Studio Monitors????

Are NS10's a good primary mixing tool, or are they better used as a "final check" for any glaring flaws left in the mix? I have heard that the ear fatigue they cause makes them less useful as one's primary monitor. If so, what is a better alternative for a similar price (about $500) ?

Ns10's are good to have around to check your mixes on, but you do NOT want ns10's as your ONLY monitors. Buy some other ones first.
There's lots of monitors in that price range. Do a search on JBL, Tannoy, Event and Yorksville for a start.

If you want some NS10's I'd go ahead and get them first. You should be able to get them for around 500 if you can still find someone who has any left. The price on used ones is rising substantially, but if you really look you can still find a set for 2 or 3 hundred.

If you really want your mixes to translate and are willing to spend the extra 15 hours getting things to sound right, get the NS10s. They are unforgiving but once you achieve truth on them, youve achieved truth everywhere. Im also a fan of the event PS5s, they are great for their nonfatigueing midrange clarity (also great low mids) but they arent as unforgiving as the NS10s. I would use the NS10s in conjunction with something with more bottom like the tannoy reveals.

In the low end of monitors, I tried KRK, JBL, Alesis,Event, Tannoy, and some others. I ended up buying the Tannoy Reveals. Others had severe problems of mids being scooped, highs too high and so on.

I recommend Tannoy Reveals

i got to use ns10's in a studio for about 3 weeks. they were that studio's primary monitors...they had a few others for reference actually...so it was the other way around than what you were thinking. but my ears were used to my Event PS6's but they adjusted well to the ns10's pretty quickly...and all my mixes wound up translating pretty well.

Gidge the monitor ones dont cost 600.00 a pair anymore. I bought mine for 140.00.

For us folk who arent in Kansas anymore Toto, they usually go for $169.....at $199/pr, you can get Yorkville YSM-1's, Tannoy Proto-J's, Hafler M5's.....

I've had my JBL's for about a month now..... they are great. I get a good bass response, and plenty enough power for working in a smaller room. I looked at many of the speakers out there... the only one I didn't get to try was the Yorkville powered models..... they weren't available. But I'm very happy with the JBL's. Good luck

Yes, MrZekeman.... I did go with the LSR25P's. I was a lil concerned about the bass response I'd get.... but its pretty punchy. Also I didn't want a huge cabinet. And these seem to fit well in my studio.. (bedroom)... I'm a happy camper good luck. Also the deal at MF is great..... I think they were like $480 a pair when I last checked.

Dang, that's a good price. The cheapest I had found them was at Mars for 600 a pair. What is MF?

I won't be able to get any for a while any how. But I do really want a set.

They do have a pretty impressive bass response for such a small package.
