I think what many of you are saying here is mostly based on opinion rather than quality. I don't understand how a recording from the late seventies/early eighties can even compare to "sound quality" of what is out now. Black Sabbath and Led Zepplin are some of the greatest bands around, but I think it would be foolish to even consider them as some of the greatest prouced/sounding records.

I think that And Wallace and Scott Litt are amazing. Trent Reznor another. Steve Albini another.
For any1to say that a Steve Albini recording is terrible because it lacks "depth and perception" and in the same breath say that Sgt. Peppers is an amazing record is ridiculous.
Has anyone listened to the last Shellac album? 1,000 hurtz is an amazing song, probably would have went Gold or platinum, but becuse he doesnt play the corporate game he doesnt get heard.

Foo-Fighters- The color and the shape Great Album
Nirvana- Nevermind Great album
Sebadoh-Bakesale-awsome
Jesus Lizard-Shot Wonderful
Dave Mathews Band Great

And one thing I dont understand: There are 2 of the greatest sounding albums "Sound quality"
1) Primus-Frizzle Fry
2) Pantera-Vulgar Display of Power

Just thought I'd through those in to show I'm not 1 sided towards the Indy/Grunge movement

Metallica- Black is great, bad songs good sound
Motley Crue-Dr. Feelgood
Skidd Row- not sure the name, the one with 18 and life
GnR-either use your illusion

once again this is only my opinion, just thought maybe it would spark some thought

rxbandits are awesome, but they sound just as awesome on the CD as they do live, so I don't agree that there was that much production done to that cd.

Definalty - they are on eof the most amazing bands I have ever heard. Some of their stuff is so hard to describe, yoiu've got to hear it to understand.

The album was incredible too. One of the best I've heard from any label, let alone a little independant like Drive-thru.

A masterpiece.

since i'm into punk, some of you may not agree.
modern
Green Day- Dookie
Weezer- Pinkerton

old
Ramones- Rocket To Russia
The Clash- London Calling

;) Good to see more punks on the board.

BIG PUNK WELCOME!

Of course it's opinion

I thought that for this thread a distinction was created between production and engineering, that is, between getting a good sound in terms of mix and feel and performance (which is timeless), vs the actual fidelity of that sound (which of course disqualifies any older recordings). Certainly there's an overlap here; no matter what goes into a 4-track cassette recorder, you're not going be able to create something I'd call 'well-produced'. And you can create a lousy mix that is very faithful sonically to the original performance. But to me this thread is about 'getting that sound.'

According to the above, Abbey Road still rules the roost in this respect.

Some great albums already listed, I can't narrow it to one or two, but a few here:

U2- Joshua Tree
Verve - Urban Hymns
Radiohead - all from OK Computer on
Badly Drawn Boy - Hour of Bewilderbeest
Robbie Robertson - selftitled
Clash - London Calling

i think some of the albums that steve albini recorded are the best i've heard.

several neurosis cds - all fantastic.
and nirvana's in utero, sounds great too.

thought of some more:

my dying bride - turn loose the swans

and although i usually favor a more live sound and can't stand ultra slick production i think all of the NIN albums sound great. namely DownwardSpiral/Broken/Fixed
