Best Pre with SPDIF out

Im new to this stuff so somebody correct me if im wrong....like I have to ask. :p

I've "heard" that you can daisychain 2 firepods but I have NOT seen it in writing. The problem with the firepod is that is your only option to add channels due to no word-clock or ADAT in/outs.

I just read the Firepods online manual and it DOES support word clock via the spdif connection. Very interesting. :D

Im going to try to find one of these tomarrow and buy one!
 
The Roland was surprisingly nice, lots of gain...but I never was able to get the SPDIF to work. Not with an M-audio, not with an E-mu, and in the end, not even with the Pro Tools TDM rig at the local university. back to the shop it went.

I'm still fond of the dbx 386, old as it is. Gives me a very intersting sound that I've found to be most excellent on spoken word, and I use it a lot when doing quick location recording of comedy troupes...
 
Anything Behringer is low-end at the most. They are cheap and you get what you pay for.

Fine for learning on and then throwing them away when you've learned enough to realize how bad they are...... which doesn't take long.

I also have the same question. My budget, though is around $800-1000. Don't really want to spend 1k if I can help it. I'm about to get a firepod, and although I like the pres, I would like to have 2 clean, hi-end channels for overdubs and overheads in addition to the 8pres. I'm looking at the Toft AC2, but not sure if it has S/PDIF out. Any advice? I also want something that I can use in a commercial studio, which I plan on opening within the next decade (no, i'm actually serious :) ). Everyone has pointed me in Toft's direction, just wanted to get some more input, as I have heard the pres aren't anything special, which is what I'm more concerned about.
 
The AC2 is fantastic value for the money... but it's the EQ, and to a lesser extent the comp, that make it so. The preamp section is deffinately not what you'd call high end, but it's still quite serviceable.
 
hmmm...i'm more concerned with pres, so I don't think that the Toft would fit me right. I tried doing a search, but my limited knowledge of pres is preventing me from finding a decent one. Any other hi end pres you can think of that have S/PDIF out? a built in compressor would be nice too, but not essential.
 
what about grace lunatec v3

this thread interests me. does anyone have any opinion about the grace lunatec v3? ideally you'd want a portable unit with great pres and great converters. how about a unit with four ins and two spdif outs? are those available?

I've been using one (MiniMe) for a couple of years to record classical (symphonic & chamber) performances. It tends toward the neutral/uncolored side of things, and has plenty of gain for ribbons (I use a Royer SF-12). I have also had occasion to use it close micing pop/rock instruments in the studio (when I needed a couple more channels of A/D for tracking a whole band at once) and it does a fine job - the compressor/limiter acquits itself well in such situations; definitely an improvement over the "soft limit" function of the original Rosetta.

You may want to check out the Presonus Eureka. I think at the moment Sweetwater is throwing in the digital out card at no cost. It's a fairly high quality mic pre with digital outs for $500/ channel. not bad.
 
One other option is an Aphex 207 Digital. Its a 2 channel tube pre with digital outs for $400. It has gotten so-so reviews but it is an option!
