Hi guys! Which is the best pre with spdif out... i´m planning to use it with my firepod...
Advice is welcome! ;)

Yeah, it's hard to say what's "best" for somebody else's situation - but FWIW the Apogee MiniMe has never let me down. May be a bit pricey for the average home recorder, though.

You´re right guys... there´s no "best"... by best i mean best performance for the money, best sounding conversers... i know it´s about opinions... but it´s always good to know...
I´m planning to spend 500 bucks... do you thinks is a good idea to buy a preamp with spdif to hook it up with the firepod digitally (avoiding FP converters)...
Or should i look for a good analog one and trust in Presonus convertes...
Thanks! In both cases, advice is what i´m looking for... ;)

For a little over $500 you could get the M-Audio Octane.

I doubt for that money you'd find a pre w/ conversion that would top the Presonus. I'd stick that money (maybe even a bit more) in one place rather than in a combo unit.

I might be wrong but I'd be a little surpised to find a $500 channel with a S/PDIF who's converter is as good as the Presonus.

Maybe someone else will chime in here but I wouldn't have any problem using the Presonus converters.

Yeah man, put all the money into the best pre you can afford.....

.... I get decent enough results with good mics and pres going into the DIGI001 converters. And everyone knows they are low-end.

Quality mics and pres will boost your sound quality a lot more than converters.

i'm really not siked about presonus's preamps i have the digimax "good for the money" and have had another cheep 2 chanell pre from them and to my ear many in the land of crap (all i can afford) are better.

I have a question...

We're buying preamps to get better quality (as the signal is processed through them), right? ...So if you buy a real nice external preamp and plug it into your firepod, won't the signal only be as good as the firepod's preamps? ...Or is there something I'm missing?

most people would send the preamp out put directly to tape(hard disc). So if you can bypass the firepod pre's that would be desirable.. Other then that your probably right.

In fact, if you plug an external preamp into the firepod, the signal will be as good as firepod´s ad/da...

That's true to a point..... BUT

A quality signal hitting average converters will yield a better result than an average signal hitting quality converters.
Pristine converters CANNOT improve the sound going through them....... "garbage in - garbage out"

Upgrade mics and pres FIRST!

The Firepod has sp/dif (digital) inputs so a pre with a digital outs would never get processed by the firepod. You also get two extra inputs (a total of 10!) this way. Its a win/win situation. :D

Ok... this make me wonder... Do you know if there´s any chance that in the near future drivers will let use more than just 1 interface at the same time?
I mean, if i could use my Firepod+EMU1212M (just to get the ADAT) and, let´s say, an Octopre... it would be GREAT!!!
I don´t know if that´s just impossible to do, or the companys don´t wanna make drivers to let us mix different units...
What do you say?
