iteacher what you get if the Great River MP-2NV wouldn't cut it?
i mean if i can, i'll try to get a budget of $3000 for the preamp..i

not saying that it won't do the cut but for about the same price(like 400 more) you get a pre and a eq with the GTQ2...they are both derived from the 1073 design and they both supposedly have tighter low mids so you don't get that neve color(mud) all over your track...this is all hearsay of course from people i respect though...they'd both be great but with GTq2 you get 2 eqs for just 500 more.... www.auroraaudio.net check it out

actualy i can tell you since i know ppl that work wit badboy he doesn't use the 737sp to lay album vox.. maybe scratch thats it..
the 737 isn't all that great and i know from experience.. i used one on 2-3 ep's i did for ppl last year.. it sounds good but its not touching a focusrite red, let alown a Langevin Dual Vocal Combo.

what type of mic are you gonna be using.. i can tell you now you can get something better than the 737sp.. i used it with a akg 414TL and a neumann u87ai..

the best part of the 737 is the eq..
and these days my focus is on r&b over hiphop... but with something like the langevin.. its good for just about anything.. so first i'll get it.. then the great river, and down the line the manley voxbox

I'd suggest the A Designs MP-2 for the application referenced in the original post.

http://www.recording.org/e-mag/article_88.shtml
I read the review and it goes toward answering the question in a thread I started "Is it a floor wax or dessert topping..." where I pose the question of a pre versatile enough to double as a DI for bass or acoustic guitar.

"My observation shows the MP-2 strongest applications are vocals, bass DI, kick drum, any application with the Royer 122 active ribbons, steel stringed acoustic guitars, that you don't want to sound like an aural exciter, synth DI, and toms."

I know little about stand-alone pres. They've been used on some of my recordings where we've added tracks in a pro studio (a client of Fletcher's BTW). The difference, to me, is extemely subtle, if audible. I for one am hard pressed to shell out $$$$ for something so subjective.

That being said, every pro I've talked to makes the assertion that they are a vital component in the signal chain. I want to believe.

c9-2001, call Fletcher and ask him to help you... he has all the good shit and helps people all the time.

heh heh...

love the "Grady must go"

you must be somewhere in my neighborhood.

after talking to a few ppl.. i'm gonna get wither the vipre or the aphex 1100... but add a LA2A with it...
thats gonna be one hell of a home studio vox chain.. the studio will be in house for now.. unless i build it the hole way in the house but i plan getting a old house, building or maybe a loft and building a full studio

IYO whats the best mic pre to buy under $2000

i'm gonna be using the pre with a u87ai and a blue kiwi

right now i'm liking the focusrite red8...they're 1700
i'm in the middle of building a r&b/hiphop pro tools accel HD3 system for my home studio

Joe Meek Studio Channel VC1 (pre-PMI) is an absolutely outstanding pre. The compressor is awesome in this unit. If you can find one, get it.

i doubt i'd find a Pre-PMI version..
its gonna be either the Vipre or the Aphex model 1100... i can get the vipre for 1899 the aphex for 1600

It's a no brainer between those two. Get the Vipre and you'll never look back.

Bet its gonna be a great chain for you!The Blue{Babby Bottle} mics that I'v tried with the Vipre really seem to react nicely with the{300.OHMs and a med.Rise} loading and rise feature, for what I was doing..Good luck

good converters and high sample rate aren't necessarily directly related...i bet lavry's at 24/44.1 sound better then wami rack at 192 for example....
