Would Grace Designs be the way to go for a pre under $600?

Thanks in advance,
Eric

hey,

Ive only heard good things about the grace designs, but at that price range, there are many desirable colors .

Others Ive not heard bad stuff about

Peavey VMP2. two channel tube preamp. New $750 used about $550. I've heard it , and it has a very phat sound.

Sytek MPX4a. Four channel solid state. New $about $750. USed, about $600. I have this one, as the reviewer said, at a list of $1500, no pre in that price range can even match it.

Of course the mindprint envoice. Solidly built unit. Great sound . About $550 new

THe vc1Q. About $550 new. Great sound on bass guitar.

how many pre's do you need? If you only need on the 101 is rad, but you may need more than one. Check out davisound, they have a 4 channel pre for around that I do belive

Well I only need one... such a tough decision. I would go and try all of those out but I don't know of anywhere around me that carries the grace design, the envoice, the peavey, or the sytek.

I use a DBX 286A channel strip. I mic pre, a compressor section, a gate and a enhancer section. I think the're less than $200 now. I realize that's it not pro studio gear but it sounds very nice, and gives vocals good sparkle. We use it for the bass too to punch it up.

If you only want one, then you need one very clean and transparent, which is what the Grace is known for. I think it also doubles as a DI, but I've not heard squat on how the DI sounds. I would assume that it DOESNT suck as a DI. I'd go with the Grace if I were you, you really cant hurt yourself going there. They Syteks would most likely run you about $1000 new, the B-stocks and overstocks are the ones that are $750, but they are getting more rare it seems. For $750, you couldnt beat 4 syteks, not that I know of.
Go with the Grace, put it in a rack tray, and put a Speck ASC next to it when you get some more money.

If you are going for clean and uncolored, you should definitely consider the Earthworks LAB101 or 102, which go for slightly less than $600 per channel.

Peace,
Rick
