I’m new to guitar playing. I have Native Instruments Guitar Rig but no other hardware other than a strat.

I’m wanting to lay down a Reggae rhythm (i.e, Skank, Chuck) guitar track, not the lead guitar. Like bob Marley is doing in this video.

Bob Marley - Stir it up - YouTube

and have it sound somewhere between this and Gregory Issac’s Night Nurse rhythm guitar.

Gregory Isaac: Night Nurse - YouTube

I know there is more going on here than just a guitar (some keyboards and such), and I realize its more than 90 percent technique (i.e., muting the strings with the fret hand) rather than just tone.

My question is, is something actively going on with pedals while the Skank is being played, or is it just set on strong Wah, Reverb, etc. and the hands are doing the rest? If so, then a pedal won’t help me because Guitar Rig is already “On”.

Any suggestions and comments will be appreciated.

Thanks!

If you're using a version of Guitar Rig without the pedalboard, it has, if I remember correctly, an "auto-wah" feature that can be dialed in to do what you're wanting to do. You can set it to virtually move with the tempo of the song. After that, I think a very clean tone with a smidge of reverb and very good technique will get you there. The technique is very important. That ching-wacka reggae style is tough to do well.

Greg,

Glad to hear you believe its tough to pull off. Because I can’t get it to sound anywhere near like what I want and I consider you a very good guitar player from what I’ve heard.

My 13 year old daughter was making fun of dad “can’t walk and chew gum at the same time” type teasing when I showed her the Marley video, so after handing her the guitar and had her try. After 10 minutes she gave up and acknowledged it wasn’t as easy as it looks. :o

I believe my problem comes from a complete lack of skill and talent on my part, but I just want to double check and make sure I wasn’t missing a key ingredient in my setup. :D

I have Guitar Rig set as you said. I’m still not really clear as to what the absence of a pedal means in my case. (hopefully nothing).

Thanks again.

.

Well skill and talent is the most important key ingredient in any set up, so without that, you're fucked.

But, if you can find a way to walk and chew gum at the same time, you have enough gear to get the sound you want.

Thanks for the compliments. I'm not a good guitar player, I just do my one thing pretty well. :D

Ok, thanks. I'll keep working on it until it sounds reasonably good. (if possible).

Tone wise, it shouldn't be hard. It's clean, with some wah if you want, and a hint of reveb. Maybe a touch of quick delay for taste. Just practice your technique.
