damn...just talked to my friend, he said that he wont have the money in 3 hours so that head is out...
he also said he wants more than a combo because he wants to be heard during band practice with another guitaist drummer and bassist..
so basically its back to 5150 (sketchy cause its ebay) or.....the randall stack ehhh
Most of these options are going to be expensive, but maybe you can shop around and get lucky and find something used:
-Peavey 5150 / 6505
-Peavey 5150 II / 6505+
-Peavey XXX
-Peavey JSX
-Peavey ValveKing
(no I don't have an endorsement deal with Peavey)
-Mesa DC5
-Mesa MarkIV (I just checked eBay and these are friggin expensive)
- Krank amps (no particular model in mind but there are a couple < $1000)
Let your friend know that just because its a stack doesn't mean that it's going to be any louder than a combo. There are lots of combo amps out there that can peel the paint off the wall. As with any amp, if its not loud enough, mic it!
Do you think that the Windsor will do death metal though? I guess with the right pedal to suppliment its preamp gain it can do anything. I guess the speakers would be the limiting factor. They'd have to be able to reproduce the tight, staccato chugging of death metal palm mutes without getting floppy or mushy. That's where my Traynor amp fails, partially due to the Celestion 70/80 speakers and partially due to the design of the amp itself. It does a great Black Sabbath metal but it just can't respond quickly to chugga-chugga palm muting. Good think I don't do chugga-chugga shit any more![]()
Your friend doesn't need a stack to be heard. A 50+ tube combo will be heard. If he feels the need, he can add an extension cab later when he can afford it.
I own a Valveking, its mediocre for metal. There are better cheap, tube amps that are voiced more for metal. Windsors would be even worse for death metal, since they're more of a classic hard rock sound. Bugera's are supposed to sound decent for metal. A used 5150, 6505 or XXX would also be a decent option.
it does metal better than cleanThanks! Im deffinatly gonna keep my eyes on some of those less expensive models =]
I looked at the windsor earlier actually, just thought the price was sketch, and it got some bad reviews..
he said hed rather dish out the "close to $1000" for an amp that hell have for 5+ years that sounds great*, than buy an okay amp for half the price, but end up having to buy another one in a few years cause it goes bad or he wants a better sound.
*-relating to death metal standards lol
Peavey Valve KingOhh, alright, ill tell him that then, what types of combos would you suggest then?
I also looked at bugera but it got bashed for being related to behringer and a rip of the jsx, also people said while the tone was actually good, it didnt last more than 2 years without something going wrong..
Can you tell me what other cheaper tube amps for metal your talking about?
Ok, at the risk of being stoned (and not in a good way).....
1. Fuck that solid state amp.
2. You do NOT choose an amp from a catalog, or from an online forum.
3. Go to a LOT of music stores and try a LOT of amps. Any store will let you spend hours trying as many amps as you want. An amp is not something you choose in 5 minutes, or buy trying only one.
4. Your friend is the only one that is going to know what amp is for him. However, having an enthusiastic friend with him (such as yourself) will keep him motivated.
5. That amp you are looking at is crap for garage bands. Spend a little more, and buy used. If you are doing metal, you can get a Dual Rec. Solo head for $1000, and then buy a cheap used cab for $100 until he can afford a better cab. That head will do any type of music you wish, he will never out grow it, and you need no pedals to make it sound better (although a compression pedal is not a bad idea).
6. Tubes, Tubes, Tubes, Tubes, Tubes, Tubes. Although there are some very good sounding solid state amps, the one you are looking at isn't one of them, and after your buddy's ears become more trained and experienced, he will outgrow it, and then the money you think you are saving him will actually be wasted money. Better to spend a little more than you can afford now, than to end up buying another amp later. You would actually be saving a LOT of money buy spending a bit more now. I can not stress this enough...go for the gold the first time around, or you will chase your "perfect" tone to the tune of years, thousands of wasted dollars, and dozens of amps that were supposed to be "good for the money", and you will eventually end up buying the more expensive one in the end. I promise you that if you buy that solid state amp, your buddy will just end up selling it down the line for half of what he paid for it.
7. If you insist on not taking any of the above advice, look online (ebay, Craig's list), and try to find a Peavey VTM 60, or VTM 120. They are tube heads, and can be found for around $200 used. Add a BBE and it will sound way better (warmer, thicker, heavier) than that amp you are considering.
8. You can get a Boogie 2x12 combo and still stay in your friends budget. A Mesa Rectoverb can be had used for $1000. If he really wants the "cool look" of a half stack, he can add another 2x12 cab later, and then it will be a "half stack". My dual rec Road King 2x12 combo is actually louder, and more powerful than my Mesa Dual Rec half stack.
Good luck, and please keep us posted on what you guys decide to do.
