Hail Santa
Hey guys, my friend is currently looking to buy a new stack and pedal. Ive been doin al the research for him because he doesnt have a comp. The style he is going for is death metal type stuff...ex. the faceless, veil of maya, periphery, all shall perish

Hes using this guitar by the way http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Ibanez-RG370DX-Electric-Guitar?sku=512368

Im set on this stack for him http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Randall-RX120RH-and-RX412-Half-Stack?sku=481735

Now I just need to know what pedal would help make this amp sound even better..I read somewhere that this pedal makes it sound good http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Boss-SUPER-OverDrive-SD1-Pedal?sku=151339

what are your thoughts on that?

what other pedals (or anything else) would help him achieve this desired tone.

I have a friend who owns that amp and it sounds pretty bitchin as is. Idk why you would by an amp knowing that your not going to like the distortion supplied by it, unless of course you are just wanting to use that pedal as a signal booster.
But some may disagree,

O and just so you know last time I talked to my bud, bout half a year ago, I could of swarn he said something about the amp getting too hot and melting some shit, but i could be wrong. Might be worth researching.

Tell him to stop being so narcissistic, and get a B-52 AT112. That's all he'll need.

Your friend. He doesn't need a stack. It doesn't make him cooler. He's sacrificing the amazing tone he can only get from tubes just to have something more show-offy.

OK. I would get the amp, plug the guitar in and see what it sounds like before assuming that you will need a pedal.

Better is a subjective term that really doesn't mean anything. To a metal guy, a Mesa dual rec will sound 'better' than a Fender twin. The country guy will think the twin sounds better...

If you plug into the amp and it sounds like you want it to, there is no need for the pedal. Even if it doesn't sound right to you, adding more distortion might not help.

Don't try to fix a problem that you might not have.

Lol dude I don't know if you think I'm the OP, cause I'm not. At least I don't remember being it. My bud bought that stack like two years ago, not that I don't disagree with what you said or anything.

Well the choice came down for my friend to being a peavey valve king stack ($900) and this one ($550)...although the peavey would have tubes, I read that solid states are actually really good sounding for metal and if I could save him money that would be ideal because his budget is max $1000.

The pedal would just boost the gain I guess? or the signal as you say?

My friend suggested instead of the overdrive getting a metal master pedal...but I told him that, that would defeat the purpose of him getting a stack because its bypassing the amps natural sound and making it digital...am I right on that...idk im a drummer hah

Well I dont even have to tell him to get a pedal if it sounds good without it, I just didnt think it would hurt? but thats true, I shouldnt assume the amp will need it, thanks for that advice

Why do you have to buy new?

The amp with a pedal is ~$650.

Add a bit more and he can get significantly better used.

Where did you read that? What kind of metal were they talking aobut? You do know that all solid state amps don't sound the same, just like all tube amps don't sound the same.

Has he even played through the amp? How do you know that you need to boost the gain?

A solid state amp is, at it's heart, a distortion box with a power amp and tone controls attached to it. Adding another distortion box in front of it is just silly.

Like sonixx pointed out, look for a used amp. A mesa dual rectifier is a much better amp than anything Randall has ever put out. Hell find a Marshall JCM 800, then you will actually need the overdrive pedal. Get an old 5150.

Get your friend out of his bedroom to go plug into some amps. Picking one out of a catalog without hearing it is a sure way to waste money, time and effort.

BTW, the resale value on a Randall is next to nothing.

Well to Sonixx quesstion its just a matter of comfortability knowing where the product is coming from and its brand new...other than that I dont mind buying used at all, I do it very often

To Farview:

1. I read it I belive in an ultimate guitar forum, they didnt say it was better than tube, just that it usually has a good metal tone.

2. I already said im not gonna suggest a pedal to him if, when he gets the amp (whatever one we decide on) if it doesnt need it.

3. Like I said im a drummer, the only thing I know about amps is from google searches hah, so everything yall are suggesting and telling me about this stuff is new to me. BUT, I trust yall more than me so im going to go scope ebay for some of those amps you suggested..do you still think I could get a head and cab for under $800-900? Ill post some links to what ive found.

btw, where we live the music stores are garb and dont have a good selection on amps on hand...plus they dont like people coming in and playing on thier stuff...especially if they know you play death metal haha

do you have any experience with a 5150? if not, you're welcome to come by my place and check one out along with various speakers. I've got several hi-gainers.

isn't the 5150 combo only 60 Watts?

+1 to this statement

he can get the Black heart 15 watt tube amp and a couple of their cabs that come equipped with Eminence speakers for a fraction more.
and this is the overdrive I recommend
it is a metal case and built to stomp on and sounds incredible.
