I will just give an out my ass opinion and say no way! Thems fightin words! My dell is making nasty snarling sounds at the mere mention of a "best buy" off the shelf system being mentioned in the same sentence. My computer speets on you computer...

Agreed brzilian, I've been burned on some pricewatch specials myself, but I have other resources as well.

I would never go with any prebuilt machine, but this thread did start out asking only about those specific companies and not wanting to build a machine. In that respect I still say Dell is the less evil of them all.

of course your vprMatrix is probably better than a Dell, especially on the proprietary component side of things :D

Yeah, I also like the case design with the blue LED's...:D

That's alot 'o machine for the money. My dell wipes the speet off your blue led and tries to make friends...

For the price that looks like a kick ass pc. But it's no where close to being anything I'd buy If I were going to use it for audio only.
DDR memory is not the best memory to use in a daw. Smaller drives are preferable for greater speed. A dual monitor matrox g550 is the popular choice for video on a daw system. And nothing says "DAW" like a rackmount case. Not to mention all the preloaded shite software you'd have to format the drive before installing any software...

But that's only if were talkin about a true daw that is daw only, throughout. I'm sure you'll never have any problems with your machine. But if your ONLY gonna use it for music, why screw around?

VPR matrix

I just got the 2.4 GHz version of the VPR and with all the rebates, it's under 200$
Absolutely awesome machine and I did my homework before buying it.

The only comparable machines for retail sale were the alienare for about 3-500$ more...must be the cool colors!

Check out the VPR...
The even have a 2.53 with dual 80 GB HD's

The blue LED's rock as well!

Right on subtractor, I like the way you stand behind your machine. And while I'm at it, I agree that for a pure DAW system much of this thread just doesn't apply. But I'm sure that not everyone here is using their machine purely for sound. But it is hard to pass up those fat rebate strings from Best Buy, sometimes you end up paying almost nothing :)

Yeah, puters are cheaper than the software these days. And I'm not doggin the matrix. With those specs it would have to perform better than my dell. I'm runnin a measly 1.3ghz p4 with 512 mb ddr. But in the next year I'll be upgrading to a real daw, and use the dell for talkin to you guys. And best buy would be the place I might shop for cdr's not a daw. I only say all this because I previously qualified Franks intentions to aquire a DAW system... And I'll probably get something like this. Right now as configured it's about $3300. I've gotta give credit to Opus2000 for the specs though.

Asus A7M266-D w/ (2)MP 2000+ processors running at 1.67Ghz
1GB DDR PC2100 RAM
431Watt PSU(Enermax)
4RU Rackmount case
Plextor 24x CDR/W
Matrox G550 Dual Monitor AGP
Adaptec 2930U 160 Single Channel SCSI Controller Card
Maxtor 20GB OS and Application drive
Store Case SCSI Removable Bay System W/ 36GB Seagate SCSI Drive
Store Case IDE Removable Bay System W/120GB WD IDE Drive
Floppy
Windows XP Pro

The test results are:
96 tracks @ 24/48...
4 Parametric EQ on all channels
Gate, Comp and Limiter on all channels
3 Ren Reverbs on all channels.....

I know that's expensive right now. I just wanted to present an idea of what kind of components should be in a daw. It doesn't have to be a dual monster like this; just aimed toward being the best at audio.
BTW, these were the specs for the machine Opus built for Paul Reed Smith http://www.prsguitars.com/.
And I guess he turned Carlos Santana on to it and he may want one too.

He also has a regular machine called the "anus" (Asus Northwood Users Society) that alot of people use or build themselves. And it's evidently a tried and true ass kicker endorsed by many, for considerably less than this system. I'll see if I can get spec and price sheets for a prebuilt. And he is the MAN when it comes to tech support.

I just talked to Opus and for $1700 he will build this:

Asus P4B266 W/1.8 Ghz processor
512MB DDR PC2100
Matrox G550 32MB AGP
20GB Maxtor OS and App drive
Plextor 12X CDR/W
Windows XP Pro
Western Digital 80GB or 100GB Data drive
4RU Rackmount case w/350 Watt PSU
Floppy Drive

All configured, installed and tested. Includes Ghost Image of install for restore in case something goes wrong...full tech support...etc etc etc

Customizations and changes are not a problem and he can tell you the best components to use for audio.

I guarantee this machine would stomp on anything best buy or dell sells when it comes to multitrack recording. And 1700 isn't bad... And when it comes to tech support, I haven't been able to pose any question to him hardware or software related that he didn't know off the top of his head...

I forgot to mention I got 12 month no interest financing by buying the vpr at BestBuy - try that with an online parts supplier!! :)

This thing is QUI-ET!!! My old PII-400 sitting next to it sounds like a freakin jet turbine in comparasin.

Still doesn't have Firewire or RAID tho...

That's just a general setup. It's not like a firewire card is hard to throw in or expensive...
