i want to get the best studio monitors regardless of cost. i do electronic stuff, if that helps. what should i get. is bigger better for hearing problems in mix? like 8" vs. 6"? thx.

So their's no limit at all? Do you want near-fields or stick-em-in-the-walls? You can get more into larger woofers in the far-field monitors.

You could get the big Genelecs, I think they are 24000 watts.

What size room are you in, and are the walls & ceiling made of concrete (like in a basement) or are the walls & ceiling made of gypsum (like in an above ground room)?

Some of the best monitor manufacturers/models:

Genelec 1032 system + sub
ADAM S3 + sub
Tannoy Ellipse 10 + sub

These systems generally start around 4k and top off around 7k. ADAM makes a series of mastering grade monitor stacks that are 11,000 bucks a piece and are supposed to be definitive monitors.

ok let me come back down a little, how about $1200 for monitors, i've been told an untreated room should use 6". how about mackies? or KRK? wheres the best place to hear monitors in Los Angeles? thx.

:D Damn straight... The best monitors for around $1200 really narrows the field a bit...

Used B&W 603's and a used Bryston amp. That'll get you somewhere nice.

Too fuckin' funny!!!! :D :p

Did you really think in the audio world the BEST would be around 1200 bucks? Heck, it costs 1200 bucks just to get an average compressor. 1200 bucks buy 'okay' monitors, but not great... and leagues from best.

Noobs... always great for comedy. :)

Okay, okay, we've had out fun (well, how could we not?)... Let's give him some more ideas...

The B&W's are solid if you've got the room. For a (physically) tight setup, an M-Audio BX8 setup with the matching sub will run you around $1000.

You could try my set up.. i like it alot and its under your price point.
I use KRK v6's and also M-audio BX5's.
Its a nice setup because you can get a great idea of waht the frequencies are doing between the both of them.
Krk's for low end and The Bx5's for the highs. My translation to other systems has improved alot since being able to A/B my mixes.

I've been getting good results with the Event Studio Precision 8s. They are about $1200.

I thought the Tannoy Reveal's were decent monitors. The active version hit his price point well.

Forget the untreated room idea though...

$1200, Tom...

Actually, if you didn't read down a few, maybe you didn't notice that part - What he meant by "regardless of price" was "under $1200."
