Thanks for your tips, guys.
I´ve sent deepwater an email but he hasn´t answered. Can anyone confirm his email address?
Are the Wharfedales that good? I`m very impressed with what´s being said here ´bout these monitors!

Thanks again!

The guy's got many e-mail addresses and hasn't replied to any of them lately. Terrible customer service. I ordered a pair from him two months ago and it's been an awful ordeal. I ended up just asking for my money back, which he still hasn't done. Save yourself the trouble and buy them locally. That's just my experience though. I know there have been others that have been a little more positive.

I´m sorry to hear that =/
Well, I guess too many people decided to order from him and he couldn´t fulfill everyone´s needs.
The problems is that buying them here is not an option. As I´ve said, I live in Brazil, and here they would cost something like Us$ 600.
And I don´t even think that I could find them here (never have)

Thanks again!

cheers

I'll second that. It seems a lot of people around here have done business with Deepwater with good results, but right now he just doesn't seem to be treating his customers with much respect. I ordered some monitors from him over three weeks ago, and despite several emails asking him what's up and when they might be shipped I have not gotten a single response from him. I know he's busy and is often on the road for his job sometimes, but the complete lack of communication on his part is a bit much.

Yeah, especially when he gladly takes the money and then drops off the face of the planet.

Yeah, but you don't necessarily have to listen to us. It's a decent price that he offers and if you can get it to work out then more power to you. That being said, it seems like all the positive reviews people gave to deepwater were from a long time ago. I haven't seen any positive reviews from people currently in the process of ordering from him.

Which are the best active monitors for a small home studio in the $300 - $450 price range?

I have a pair of M-Audio BX5's and they do not have adequate bass response. I get better results monitoring in conjunction with a Sony home stereo. I think you'd be better off saving a little more and buying the right monitors.

Check out the March 2005 issue of Electronic Musician. They recommend the below monitors for under $600. If I were in your shoes I'd save and then look into these:
1. Event TR 8XL ($600)
2. Alesis ProLinear 720 ($600)
3. Fostex PM-2 ($500)

$200 is a huge difference to me. My country´s currency is really low-valued if compared to u.s. dollars

I ordered from Deepwater back in January and, while there was a delay in shipping, it was due to Federal Express shipping them to the wrong address -- not Deepwater's fault. Fortunately, the person who received them called me and all turned out well.

Except....

Suddenly one of my monitors has gone dead. Very faint sound, but no amplification. I emailed deepwater a few days ago and haven't received a response. Today I emailed the wharedale America reps and am waiting to hear from them.

By the way, the Wharedales (when they're working) sound excellent.

Note to Nuemes...

I think you're really missing the boat with your BX5s. Adding a sub, even a $100 Wharfedale Powercube 8, would produce an excellent monitoring system. Folks like BJ, Carlos Rios, and others are using the same system (with the SBX sub)--which has been applauded in pro reviews. To give up on your BX5s without adding a sub, which I agree they need, and move to a home stereo instead is a crying shame. I think your jaw would drop if you gave this setup a try.

Just some unsolicited feedback from a very happy BX5/sub user,

J.

Sub

M-Audio BX5 and Wharfedale Powercube 8 sub. Total paid retail $370. Stunning sound, well integrated, completely tweakable, and small enough for a tight studio space.

2 votes- everyone winds up getting a sub it seems no matter what they
buy, Wharfs or any others, might as well calculate$$ in a sub.

jeffree sold me on the idea and it works.

a sub can also offer the "modern day Auratone/NS10 consumer comparison setup", think about it everyone has a subwoofer these days so best to
get your skills in mixing on 'em too. IMO.

If I remember correctly, our well respected Richard here initially turned me onto the benefits of the BX5/sub combo.
After mixing for a year with just the BX5s (no sub), what surprised me the most when I added a sub was how the sound of my BX5s themselves seemed to change. Besides beging able to dial in just the right amount of deep bass to suit my small studio, I found that the overall sound spectrum of my BX5s sounded extremely smooth. Any hint of excessive brightness that I'd noticed before suddenly disappeared after adding a sub, making the mids and highs as clear and crisp as ever, but with a slightly softer non-fatiguing spread.

I was reminded so vividly of how changing one set of freqs will affect all the others, just as when I mix.

gearheads

BX8's on sale at Musians Friends for $279!! thats a good FN deal,
and i don't even need speakers... gearhead pressure level increasing..
must calm down...deep breaths...1,2,3,4,......breath out....whooooooshssshh

hehehe :D :D
I would certainly buy them if I was in the States right now.
I hope they keep that price until July :o :o

i'd lean towrd your room changing with the sub added also, not completey
the BX5's...but no doubt they sounded different,
damn think of all the extra
work the BX5's don't have to do now!!
BX5's can concentrate on mid's that
could have been lost in the "fight" due to
the low freqs being too much on a little speaker...

eduleal,
Read up onthese WHarfs....there's a huge Quality Control
problem on the China built ones (Actives).
I'd go to a store and listen first...if you get a sour deal,
you'll lose your $30 you saved when you ship 'em back
and also your time ( and money will be tied up!!).

unless I save over 50% i wouldn't know why one would ship???

but hell, people on Ebay pay more for USED sht than Brand New...
so do your own thing. there are a lot of dumbasses out there.

a lot of happy Wharfs owners, however they are much quieter after a month...the hype-mania has died down some.
Hilarious, the HYPE....one guys showed up with a blown tweeter
and he said he STILL LOVED HIS WHARFS!!!!!!!

I almost bought some yellow-passives...still might. $189 pair.

What stores and brands do you have where your from????

.

Well, I´m actually planning on going to the states soon, so I´ll probably buy it there. I sure don´t have the Wharfs here (they would cost me much more than $50 to ship) but I have the M-audios, the Behringers, the Alesis, the Tapcos, the Events and the KRKs. So these are ones I can try and I have tried some, but when it gets to your room it sometimes sound completely different. And music stores here don´t have good return policies.

Thanks for your concern! =)

monitoring at $300-400

well, unless your absolutley sold on the Wharfedales...
the Events, KRK's, M-Audio are decent and availble to you to try out?
No $hipping$$$$ & unknown issues (return -$).

of course i bought mine off e-bay and just got lucky,
but thinking logically...your rolling dice buying speakers
sight-unseen or is it sight/unheard.

I don't think your dealing with garbage or awesome decision here..
all on your list are probably in the same "range"...$300-400 :)

maybe options will be your deciding factor?
jacks? control knobs? M-Auudio has the switches alot of people
prefer...ect, aydyaydyayadayada

To follow up on my post above, Deepwater contacted me a couple days after I emailed him and is sending me a replacement tomorrow. Since my initial email, he has responded to me daily and is doing his best to take care of the situation.

As for the quality of the Wharfedales, they sound far better than anything else in their price range. Yes, I had one die on me, but the problem is being rectified at no expense to me, and the sound quality is excellent. I wouldn't hesitate to buy them again. And again.
