Best monitors below $140?

Hello all, I'm on a really strict budget, and I need to know.. what are the best pair of monitors I can get for $140?
 
Keep the money you have and save up for a pair of good ones.
I know that sucks to hear now, but it will not be long before you regret buying crappy monitors.

computer speakers, probably. The quality in pro audio at that price will most likely be worse than if you shelled out for a decent pair of consumer computer speakers of that price.
 
hey i paid $125 for a pair of KRK ST6 and they rock! of course that's used...and you'll need a nice amp to power em...
 
cool deal... but..that's used. And, a decent amp will cost at least as much as he's willing to spend...to be honest... if he spent $150 on computer speakers they would be probably much better than what $150 could get him in "pro audio speakers" for that price. audio and music stuff is overpriced half the time, when compared to something consumer grade which is priced to be ultra competetive to people who don't want to spend more than a buck 50 for a THX grade 7.1 speaker system for them to listen to hallmark card music on. In the ultra low end of recording gear, you're better off with consumer grade stuff. Or just grab an old pair of hi-fi speakers...some of them aren't that bad. I had a pair from the early 80s that actually sounded very good for the $20 I spent on them at a thrift store =D They had a pretty good frequency response. Or...just save for a bit more... if you save double that, say... your options will vastly improve.

I mix on little Creative surround sound speakers. :) Of course, I unhooked the 2 rear ones and just use the 2 for stereo + the sub.

At first glance, you'd think it would be impossible to get a good mix on these things but I've been using them for a few years now and I never have any trouble getting my mixes to translate well to other systems. Maybe because they are so similar to other systems. :confused:

I may get monitors eventually but really, I don't see the need.
 
mixing with monitors is only easier... it's perfectly possible to mix on normal computer speakers. esp for a smaller price point, like the OP was looking for. I had a pair of Sony powered monitors, a bit like NS10s that are great stands for candles in my studio lol... I prefer to use the $100 logitech computer speakers as a second pair rather than the slightly more expensive sonys.
 
throw an eq in front of some nice computer speakers, and listen to some music (not eq'd from the pc) and get it to sound the way you like it. Then mix with that eq on and your mixes should translate well, as their frequencies should be spread just as even as those pro quality recordings you were listening to when you set it up in the first place. That's how i do it anyways. but then i have a nice dell 300 watt setup. even a home stereo setup would do you well if you can find a way to run your pc through it.
 
best ones i bought at that price were probably some JBL Control 5's at a pawn shop...they call it Jewlery & Music...but its a frkn pawn shop.:p

$125 pair.....retail was like $500-600.... but an amp is needed

as drewzOr stated..probably need to save up to the $300 range...

although thinking as I type, I grabbed some excellent shape, used M-Audio Bx5, or whatever they're called, for $180...from the same place.
 
it's harder to mix with headphones...they don't usually translate as well, without a lot of work to speakers.
