best mixing software?

I'm trying to decide what software to buy to do my mixing, but I'm a poor student and that is a huge consideration (unfortunately) in my decision. What software will give me a good start up but not be complete garbage and is cheap?

most of the manuf have educational versions... check those out...cubase for instance which has a current street price of @$600 goes for like $200 for students...

Audacity will get you in the ballpark quickly, then you might want to get into something like CuBase, Pro Tools or Cakewalk when you've become a bit more understanding of the features that each offers. Good luck!
