best mic for the buck

I regularly use Nt1000,s At4033,s and Beh B1 and I have to say the B1 does never disgrace itself.

I also use it live for use on Amp cabs and the results are certainly different and to my ears much preferable to the usually recommended dynamics.

The B1 really is amazing for the price but remember I am a fully paid up member of the berry fand club (even own 4 of their mixers).

Hey Chessrock,

Do you think the NTK is better than an SP TB-1? Both are cardiod only tube mics, but the NTK is about $500 and the TB-1 is only $300 (at least that's what I paid for mine back in march).

The TB-1 is the only tube mic I've ever used, so I don't know how good it is relative to anything else; BUT I sure do like it on my vocals. I also have a Shure KSM27, and I prefer the TB-1 on my vocals to the KSM27, but it's fairly close; not a huge difference. The TB-1 just seems to have a bit more of what I want than the KSM27. It's a little "fuller".

Anyway, I'm curious about how the TB-1 compares with the other tube mics out there.

Thanks,
Tom

That's a good question, but I have no direct experience with the TB-1 to answer that one.

From what I have heard from others, it seems like these two mics are very different animals.

What I keep hearing out of the TB-1 camp is "smooooth, silky, but in a less hyped way."

And what I know of the NTK, I think "smoooth, but with a lot of sizzle."

yup, $500 is enough to get a variety of good mikes,
rather than just one.

The Electro-Voice EV 635a omni dynamic is also excellent on guitar amps, and many vocals. And it runs...
under $80 bucks used in good (or better) conditon.
One of the EASIEST mikes to use for either application since placement is more forgiving, being an omni.
Very resistant to vocal "popping" when you close mike.

Chris

I recently tried out a Studio Projects C1. It's a very nice microphone; warm, clear, and smooth.

thanks for your replies... how about an 8 channel rackmount pre amps? would the preamps on a Behringer MX9000 be sufficient for drums? id use a nice pre amp on everything else, i just dont know if i can afford 8 pre amps. any suggestions?

This should start shipping any time, I think...

Yes it will, unfortunately we delayed it because of a custom extrusion we are making for it. We want to use the extrusion on all the new Meek units, which you can get a peak at the first one at www.joemeek.com The picture is just a rendering so keep that in mind, but the TwinQ is finished and into proto-typing now. We will have a real photo soon.

The new face plates are an extrusion with a slight curve to them. We wanted the 828 to match the rest of the line so we had to design a custom extrusion in a 1U size, so it is very close now.

For all of you saying that the NTK is $499 or even $450, just do about 30 seconds more research and you will find it for SIGNIFIGANTLY less than that. Then simply get your favorite retailer to price match it. :D

Pray tell, where? I got a quote from musiciansadvocate.com for $425 + shipping, but I wouldn't call that SIGNIFIGANTLY less than $450.

bpmmusic.com

$389 free shipping (I just called to verify). Guitar Center matched it for me.

Maybe "SIGNIFICANT" was a strong word, but still a hell of a deal.

I call $389 a very good deal- even if I've never tried the NTK.

I have the NT1000. I love it.

Forgot to mention that you have to either call or go through the whole "email for price" business.

Wow! Good work. If I didn't already have one, I'd be all over that.

Best tube mic - Definitely Rode NTK

Although, it is a little hard to answer this question - probably because you could pay the same amount of money on a high quality FET mic and get better or worse results - most people have differing budgets, instruments, playing style, needs, recording environments, monitoring and hearing etc. etc.

ie. What is good for me may not be as good for you and vice versa. Variety is the spice of life...

Gee, it is so easy to OVER analyse...

Yea but it's also easy to under analyse and end up with a shitty mic that doesn't work well for you. I'd prefer to over analyse myself :)
